Police on the Isle of Wight seized an e-Scooter when its uninsured rider failed to stop for officers, marking a new era of road crime.
C-Shift were acting on intelligence in relation to the supply of drugs near to Northwood Cricket Club in Cowes last night (Thursday) when they identified a male suspect.
The individual drove at Police on his electric scooter before making an escape. However, he didn’t get far and was stopped just a few streets away.
The male remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs.
Officers seized the scooter as the vehicle – which is technically classed the same as a car – failed to stop and was being ridden without insurance.
It is currently illegal to use e-Scooters on the roads or pavements, although restricted trials are taking place elsewhere in the UK.

He is just one of many using e scooters to get about selling drugs. Easy to pick them out as they all have the same backpacks. So now caught don’t give them slapped wrist put them inside and fine their parents heavily

Because it is electrinc powered. They are 100% illegal to use on the road as they are classed as a motorised vehicle. The only ones that ARE allowed on roads are those that are on hire from an authorised hire company in order that the government can evalaute how they can be made ‘road legal for everyone. That will no doubt include a requirement to be insured ( cheap) a driving licence ( a ‘special’ one?) and a crash hat.

I saw two youngsters riding side by side through Binstead main road the other day on the pavement and was concerned that it would take very little to knock in to each other. That would end up with one knocked in to the path of on coming traffic.
They are a great idea for pollution free travel and do give a decent range and speed but need to be used with great respect.
Parents need to be aware of this before they get pressured in to buying one with the addition that they are still illegal to use outside of private land.
This could be the future of localised electric travel but designated infrastructure is really needed. Cycle lanes could do the job well but sadly I don’t see the available room.
Personally, I see no issues with electric scooters. Electric bicycles are legal to use on the road- no insurance/driving licence/helmet required!. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE ???
All powered two wheeled vehicles should be treated the same as mopeds. Licensed, taxed, tested, insured, the present e-bike loophole is ridiculous, they are mopeds!
There is a difference. Most e-bikes are now power assisted. Meaning you have to keep pedalling, unlike the moped.
e-bikes are limited to 15mph assisted and you have to pedal, by law. If you tamper with the e-Bike to circumnavigate this you are then breaking the law.
If they are used by people to distribute drugs yes take them away , I have ridden an electric scooter for years about 12 mph on the flat and push up hill and never been stopped ridden responsibly they harm no one and are used widely in citys they are low wattage and go a little faster than the bigger mobility scooters and they don’t need insurance to go on roads or pavements do they

I think you’ll find it’ll be something to do with the scooter not having pedals ..! There is/was the same law to do with the old mopeds years ago they all had pedals .. but you try pedaling one of them home

If they are used sensible, one was going along staples the other week near blacklands lane , unaware what was going on behind him , as he had head phones on .
the difference is a electric bike has to still be peddled to have the battery to engage for assistance, a e scooter needs no assistance from the rider its either twist and go or put your heal on the kill switch at the back, so when you lift your foot or fall of what ever comes first it stops

These have been highlighted on the daily news channels and the law clearly states, THEY CANNOT BE USED ON THE PUBLIC HIGHWAY. I would suggest some people need to start watching the daily news, either on the TV or online, you might just learn something!!!!! They are illegal.

I’m not one for drugs myself and I believe it is a big part of crime i.e some people would rob their own grandma to get them. I see a lot of people making comments about the youth of today always doing wrong but that’s because everything we could do as kids is illegal now. We put so many restrictions on them. Insurance to ride a electric scooter another restriction. No wonder all kids want to do is sit in and play xbox and not play in parks like most of us use to.
I totally agree. Also we have to remember that youth is a transition period and it’s actually psychologically normal to act outside the expected norm. I don’t get why people have to get so angry it’s very bad for us.
We need to get angry at stuff that deserves it I think.

Marcus, read my reply to Anonymous further up….. Yes they are electric but can you imagine if they were made legal, people would be getting injured all the time, riders and pedestrians. We’ve got enough people who can’t drive a car safely on the IOW, we don’t need bloody e-scooter accidents added to the list!!!
It is about time that the Police put a stop to this kind of vehicle. I was pushed over by one of these vehicles in Newport on Monday in the square next to Lloyds Bank.
Same ones are being used in Ryde. They go very fast. One was keeping up with me in a 30 limit. Electric assisted bicycles are limited, these are way faster. Could cause some serious damage.
