Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help locate a male who made ‘gestures’ to an 11-year-old girl in Newport yesterday morning (Wednesday), which has sparked concern among the local community.
The young girl was on her way to school at Nine Acres Primary School at around 08:30 when she was approached by the unknown male, who tried to encourage the child towards a van. This led to the school issuing a letter to parents, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now issued an appeal for information, in a bid to locate and question the man thought to be at the centre of this alarming incident.
The suspect is described as Black, aged in his 30s, of medium build with short black hair. He was wearing a dark red polo shirt and navy blue trousers.
Police have confirmed that the girl was not hurt.
Inspector Kerry Myles from the District Policing Team has said:
“We take all reports like this very seriously and officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be patrolling the area as part of our enquiries and engaging with local schools. We have not received any other similar reports in the area.
Article continues below this advertisement “I’d encourage anyone with concerns or information to speak to our officers when you see them. It’s also worth considering highlighting this incident to your child and using it as an opportunity to talk about personal safety if appropriate”.
