Police are continuing their investigations into the sudden death of a 23-year-old woman in Cowes last week, which is being treated as unexplained.
It was during the early hours of last Wednesday (20th August) that emergency services were called to an address on Elm Grove, where a young woman had been taken ill.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics and medics from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, nothing could be done to save the 23-year-old’s life, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident has prompted a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, due to the woman’s prior contact with Police. It is understood she was on bail in relation to an incident earlier in the month.
Officers have maintained a presence on Elm Grove over the past week as investigations continue. Forensic investigators have also been seen coming and going.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that the death is still being treated as unexplained, but is not currently thought to be suspicious.
An IOPC spokesperson has said:
“We can confirm that we have received a mandatory referral from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, in relation to the death of a woman on Wednesday 20 August in Cowes, Isle of Wight, where there was recent police contact prior to her death.
“We are assessing the referral and will decide whether further action may be required from us.”
