Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following the sudden death of a 23-year-old woman in Cowes during the early hours of this morning (Wednesday).
It was at 00:35 that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to an address on Elm Grove, where paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were treating a woman.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was also scrambled to the scene, landing off Park Road.
Sadly, nothing could be done to save the life of the 23-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say that the death is being treated as unexplained, but is not currently thought to be suspicious.
However, a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been made due to the woman’s prior contact with Police.
The matter remains under investigation and a file is being prepared for the Coroner.
An IOPC spokesperson has said:
“We can confirm that we have received a mandatory referral from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, in relation to the death of a woman on Wednesday 20 August in Cowes, Isle of Wight, where there was recent police contact prior to her death.
“We are assessing the referral and will decide whether further action may be required from us.”
