A dog that caused a woman puncture wounds to the arm during an incident in Oakfield earlier this week has been put to sleep, Police have confirmed.
It was at just gone 18:30 on Wednesday (26th March) that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were alerted to an incident on the High Street in Oakfield.
It’s understood that a large dog on the loose attacked a local woman, resulting in injuries to her arm. She attended St Mary’s Hospital for treatment shortly after.
A smaller dog was also injured in the incident, suffering injuries to its leg.
Now however, some 4 days after the incident, it has come to light that the dog has been put to sleep.
A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary Spokesperson has said:
“Following consultation with all parties, including the victim and the owner of the dog involved, the animal was taken to a vet and has been humanely put to the sleep.”
Police also confirmed that the incident has been dealt with by means of a community resolution, as opposed to any criminal conviction.
What does the law say about such incidents?
It’s an offence to let a dog be dangerously out of control, whether that’s in public or private.
A dog is considered to be out of control if it injures someone or makes someone worried that it might injure them.
Anyone with concerns about a dangerous dog should contact police on 101. Dial 999 in the event of an emergency.

Owners need to be more responsible,
then such incidents may not happen.
It’s astonishing, the number of loose dogs and the absolute refusal of the part of some (not all) owners to take responsibility for. You hear things like “he’s such an escape artist ” and “she’s jumped the gate again”. Your dog – your responsibility. This poor dog has caused pain and distress, through no fault of it’s own, and has now lost it’s life. Could have been a one off, I guess. But either way, love your dog and keep them under control!

There is a certain type of person that own these type of dogs & we all know who they are Oakfield mmm.
Says the one who’s grammar should be put to sleep. It was my dog that was bitten. The lady in question tried to help this other dog by giving it a home and tried to rehabilitate it from a poor upbringing. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Our family have no animosity towards her. I will revert to my last comment on the original story. Think, before posting.
The hateful rhetoric of dog owners during these increasingly frequent events are what’s fuelling the tide against them.
Yes thinking about it, I still come to the same conclusion, it’s a certain breed of owners who have these dogs, last night on the news yet another attack in a place that frequently happens Warrington or Leeds says it all.
