The discovery of suspected ordnance on the beach at Sandown has led to Police clearing the area this morning (Monday). Officers are currently in attendance near The Sundial Cafe off Culver Parade, where members of the public are being kept off the beach in the interests of public safety. Police were alerted to the find by a member of the public shortly before 08:00. The suspected explosive has been marked with a stick. The item is described as being the size of a Coke can, but the expert advice of the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team is being sought.
UPDATE @ 10:44 – A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We were called at 7.29am on Monday, 6 November after a suspected piece of unexploded ordnance was located on the beach at Culver Parade. “Officers are in attendance and a cordon is in place as a safety precaution”.

UPDATE – It has been confirmed that the device has been destroyed by means of a controlled explosion at nearby Yaverland Beach. Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts removed the device and relocated along the Bay to conduct the controlled detonation.
