A planning application has been submitted to build 4 new apartment buildings to the rear of Sandown’s The Grand Hotel, demolishing existing buildings in the process – at least 1 of which was recently damaged by fire.
Isle of Wight Hotels Ltd. is seeking permission to demolish 4 existing residential apartments and outbuildings to the rear of the Art Deco hotel, constructing 4 brand new apartments in their place.
It is proposed that the new apartments off Culver Parade would be made up of 2x 2-bed and 2x 3-bed dwellings with 8 parking spaces and associated landscaping. The layout of the area would be changed with just 2 buildings constructed, replacing the 3 existing buildings that sit in a courtyard format.
The planning application was submitted to the Isle of Wight Council in early July and validated on 23rd September. A decision on the future of the site is set to be made by 18th November.
It was on 3rd October that multiple fire crews were mobilised to the apartment block behind The Grand when a fire broke out. Around 80% fire damage was sustained to one of the single-storey buildings, which is said to have been well-alight when firefighters arrived on scene.
It was in 2014 that permission was granted to demolish The Grand Hotel and replace it with a new, more modern hotel. However, that planning permission has now lapsed as work had to begin before October 2019. This new application could suggest that improvements are finally set to be made to The Grand Hotel and the surrounding land, which sits on a prime seafront site next to the zoo and Dinosaur Isle.
Planning permission is also being sought by Isle of Wight Hotels Ltd. for the former Savoy Hotel site in Sandown, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The Sandown Phoenix succeeds again.
Twice today alone on the Echo, the fire damaged buildings of two hotels, the Savoy and the Grand, remains spring forth planning for new buildings to emerge from the ashes.
Sandown is a dump. We need to start again
Is that not what they are doing, knocking this down and building new?
after 13+ thumbs up you IE remove my comment??????????? WHY?????????
Knock them down & make into an area for the public to use.
All these new builds the Island if lacking in infrastructure to support them.
Our loverly Island will soon be a concrete jungle!
Build a new Hotel, good for business and would create more jobs
I am not defending the business people that have desecrated Sandown with there delapidated buildings left to rot with total disregard for the towns resident whilst overlooked by our island and local councils obviously afraid of the all powerful business people that run this island ….
But if those business people are prepared to spend there money clearing up there mess even to make more money let them do it….
Let’s hope the Tarvic 2 the Moritz the royal and all the shells of former hotels and neglected buildings get noticed at some point soon …. Maybe a few nice buildings will spur on a seafront revival and end years of neglect.
You forgot the Royal York in Ryde same owner , What a bleeding suprise !!!
Of course this could be a paper exercise to obtain planning consent which would considerably increase the value of a lot of the eyesore heaps of rubble which now have run over the alloted timescale.
I would like to think better of the person’s applying only time will tell…..seeing commercial grade hoarding erected covering these eyesores would send the right messages to us the residents…. Maybe we may even start believing in our council who should be protecting the public interest just on health and safety grounds, let alone the visual impact on island visitors…
