3 large houses could be built on the site of the former Savoy Hotel in Sandown if a newly submitted planning application is given the green light by Council officials.
Isle of Wight Hotels Ltd. has applied to the Isle of Wight Council to build 3x 4-bed properties where the once-grand Savoy previously stood on the corner of Victoria Road and Avenue Road.
Each of the proposed properties would be 3 stories tall with a rooftop garden. A total of 10 car parking and 6 cycle parking spaces would be created too, alongside associated landscaping of the area. Under the scheme, vehicular access would be from Victoria Road only.
In 2014, planning permission was granted for the demolition of the derelict Savoy with 19 flats to be built in its place. By July 2016, the site had been completely flattened but it has remained a wasteland ever since. In 2018, planning permission was given for the development of 12 dwellings. However, the project has failed to get underway and efforts to sell the site to developers have proved fruitless.
The applicant says that the previous scheme is simply not viable due to the costs of groundwork. Therefore, an alternative use for the land is now being sought which doesn’t require expensive piling and other groundwork.

During the early to mid 20th century, the Savoy Hotel was a grand building that attracted swathes of visitors to Sandown, but over the years it fell into disrepair. After being turned into bedsit apartments it became a blight on the landscape of Sandown. In December 2011, a major fire ripped through the empty building, which saw over 50 firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service tackle the blaze throughout the night.
This latest application was submitted by Nick Spyker’s Isle of Wight Hotels at the end of July and was validated by the Council’s planning department on 23rd September. A decision on whether to give permission is expected by 18th November.

Owned I beleive, or least was so, by a councillor, so planning permission will be ‘hard’t then?
Sandowns’ all cleansing fires that mariously occur before several costly homes rise from the ashes after a ‘suitable’ and respectful period of time.
As far as I know Nick has never been a councillor.
Or…. they could build a lot more home that are proper affordable to locals, instead of 3 houses for the well off.

How surprising… not!
Petel paradise
What is going to be burnt down next
More rich houses but will get planning I’m afraid
Could easily build a small block of flats and house more of the people who live and work on the island. Put in the covernace that has to be main residence (no second home) and can’t be rented out. Buy to let is pricing locals out of home ownership. You send so much on rent you can’t save to buy a house. The mortgage on my house was almost half my neighbour was paying in rent! Buy to let is a way for the haves to have more.
Does this guy own the Grand at Yaverland? If he does, the IOW planners should give him permission to build on the Savoy site IF and only if, things start moving and decisions made about the Grand site within 1 year.
Let them build…. anything that will help kick start Sandown’s rejuvenation is welcome…. I do agree that a 12 month commencement agreement should be implemented as part of the agreement.
There’s to many run down properties change hands just to become a bigger eyesore …… Let’s have more of the rate money collected in the bay area spent in the bay area….. (Sorry about the rant)
