‘PERSON IN THE WATER’ RESCUE AT SHANKLIN

UPDATED: HM Coastguard and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are in attendance at Shanklin Esplanade this afternoon (Wednesday) where at least 1 casualty has been pulled from the water.

Emergency services were alerted to 2 persons in the water opposite The Napier complex at just before 13:45, prompting a response from Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team, 2 ambulances and an ambulance officer.

Coastguard Rescue Officers are now working with paramedics to transfer the individual to an awaiting ambulance. Their condition is unknown at this time.

A second ambulance is also on scene and is dealing with a distressed male.

Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat is believed to have also been tasked to the incident, but is not currently on scene.

UPDATE @ 14:42 – A man is being rushed to St Mary’s Hospital this afternoon having sustained head injuries in the incident.

Police officers are now on scene at Shanklin Esplanade and are speaking with the second male and witnesses. Meanwhile Coastguard officers are conducting a search of the beach.

Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat has been stood down.

UPDATE @ 16:34 – An area of Shanklin beach has been cordoned off by Police as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this afternoons’ event.
