2 males are being sought by Police after a woman was mowed down by an illegal e-bike on the High Street in Ryde last night (Sunday).
It was just before 20:10 that the incident occurred on the pedestrianised section of the High Street, near to the junction with Star Street.
CCTV footage acquired by Island Echo shows that the electric bicycle travelled up the High Street from Garfield Road at speed. The bike’s headlight was then activated, which saw the pedestrian move over to allow the vehicle – approaching from behind – to pass.
But in a shocking turn of events, the pedestrian was struck by the fast-paced e-bike. Based on time and distance, Island Echo has estimated that the bicycle was travelling at approximately 34mph when the impact occurred – twice the legal limit.

Footage shows that 1 of the riders very quickly hot-footed it away from the scene, pushing the bicycle alongside. The limping male made off towards Iceland car park and Warwick Street.
The other rider, also a male, stayed at the scene to make sure the pedestrian was ok. But once confronted by a passing member of the public, they too ran off down Star Street and into Iceland car park.
The casualty was on the floor for around 2 minutes before being offered assistance by a local Chinese takeaway ahead of the arrival of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, which dispatched a critical care paramedic and an ambulance crew to the scene. Police also attended the area to make initial enquiries.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that the female pedestrian sustained minor injuries in the collision.

A pedestrianised area too. It was only a matter of time. There will be no justice though.
The sooner e bikes and scooters are banned the better
If they ain’t speeding along roads they are
speeding along pedestrianised high streets.
I would round up all illegal e.bikes and have them crushed.

The police need to take action against these kids cutting around on these bikes with their balaclavas on.
They are basically taking the Mickey out of them; they should start using the MET police tactics. They would think twice about using them then.

Confiscate their mobile phones and vapes
That will stop them re-offending
Absolute moronic scum and I do hope that the judge takes into account that these cowardly males left this woman injured and alone collapsed on a dark, cold road in the middle of a freezing winter night.
I do hope the person who was hit is ok. This is sadly going to happen more often. If the Police hang out between Ryde (via Puckpool) and Seaview you will see this quite often. All dressed in black, no lights, flying along. In the case of Seaview Duver, a 20mph limit, which they are clearly doing in excess of. Are these illegal bikes not seen by law enforcement? Because we see them all the time, even if they are dressed like ninjas on their chariots!
@Wolf it’s not e-bike it’s the rider..there are lots of people who have e-bikes on the island and belong to clubs who respectively enjoy riding as a hobby.Banning e-bikes isn’t going to stop people riding them irresponsibly.
Remember when we had those people who used to walk around towns, I think it was called ‘a beat’. They would wear a uniform and would be able to arrest people doing stuff like this. What were they called? Oh, yes, police officers.
Whatever happened to them?
On CP about 4 years ago they stated there were around 120 police officers on the Island (including Neighbourhood Policing and CID). It’s a shame we see so little of them.
We need to bring back the old style policing

the extra police the island needs.
