A pedestrian has been injured after being run over by a car whilst walking along the pavement in Ryde Town Centre this morning (Saturday). A blue Kia Picanto has left the road at Cross Street, mounting the pavement and travelling a short distance between parked vehicles and buildings – mowing down a pedestrian in the process. The Kia – which has only come to a stop after crashing head-on into a road sign – has also collided with a Renault Captur, a Peugeot 208 and a Citroen van. Police, fire and ambulance crews are all in attendance having been alerted to the collision at around 11:00.
The crossroads junction of Cross Street and George Street has been cordoned off as medics tend to the injured pedestrian and work to establish the circumstances of the crash. Southern Vectis Routes 4, 9 and 37 will leave Ryde via Dover Street, Park Road, Monkton Street and St John’s Road to continue a normal route from the parish Church.
UPDATE @ 11:50 – The pedestrian is not thought to have sustained any life-threatening or life-changing injuries at this time, Police say. It has been confirmed that 4 vehicles have been involved in this morning’s incident which is thought to have been caused by a vehicle failing to give way. The occupants of the cars involved are thought to have escaped injury but have been checked over by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, which has a paramedic crew, a critical care paramedic and an operational commander on scene.
UPDATE @ 12:20 – The male pedestrian has now been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment. The fire service and ambulance service have stood down from the incident, but Police remain on scene. The road is expected to remain closed until recovery of all the vehicles can take place, and until a full picture of the pedestrian’s injuries is clear.
UPDATE @ 19:45 – Roads in the town centre remain closed this evening, with the Collision Investigation Unit called in to conduct s forensic examination of the scene. Read more at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/collision-investigators-probe-scene-of-serious-pedestrian-collision-in-ryde/.
