The mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit has been called in to conduct a forensic examination of the scene of a crash in Ryde, in which a pedestrian was seriously injured this morning (Saturday). Cross Street and George Street in the town centre remain closed this evening as Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary tries to piece together the events of late this morning, gathering vital evidence that could help any further proceedings. As first reported by Island Echo, a Kia Picanto collided with 2 cars before mounting the pavement and mowing down a pedestrian, further colliding with a parked van. The vehicle only came to a stop when it collided head-on with a road sign. Emergency services rushed to the scene at just gone 11:00, with paramedics later transferring the injured pedestrian directly to St Mary’s Hospital. The male casualty’s condition hasn’t changed from the description given this morning say Police, with injuries described as non-life threatening or life changing. However, it is known the pedestrian has since been flown from St Mary’s to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
It’s thought that a vehicle failed to giveaway at the junction of George Street, Melville Street and Cross Street. All drivers involved passed roadside tests including eyesight and a breathalyser. Roads in the town centre have been cordoned off for 8 hours now and are expected to remain closed into tonight.
