An overdue dinghy prompted a search operation involving Cowes RNLI and HM Coastguard in Newport last night (Friday).
Cowes Lifeboat was tasked to launch by Solent Coastguard at shortly before midnight following reports of a person in a small dinghy having left Newport Harbour and becoming overdue. Despite the nature of the tasking, the lifeboat had to proceeded slowly and with caution down the River Medina due to the boating traffic returning from the Isle of Wight Festival, including some boats that were unlit.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Newport Initial Response Team were also tasked to the area and eventually located the dinghy and its occupant safe and well.
It is thought the individual may have fallen asleep.
Emergency teams were stood down by 00:45.
