An out of control bonfire has caused damage to a garden hedge in Newport this evening (Thursday).
2 appliances from Newport were mobilised to Mayfield Drive at just gone 20:00 when a blaze took hold of a hedge.
It’s understood that a bonfire in a neighbouring garden quickly became out of control and spread to the nearby greenery.
Crews have managed to get the situation under control before it could cause any further damage to a detached bungalow. The property adjacent to the fire has suffered a burnt front garden with some light damage to the plastic guttering too.
It’s not the first time that firefighters have been called to the area – which was prompted by a bonfire on that occasion too.
With temperatures rising over the coming days – and potentially reaching 35c next week – there is a significant risk of fire across the Island.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.
should the neighbours of the ‘bonfirer’ approach the council to issue a nuisance notice, they’ll still be asked to fill in a time sheet over a couple of weeks.

There was in Ventnor. But that was not just a brown envelope cover up, that was a huge war chest of a cover up. Loads of evidence, video footage, people seen acting suspiciously in the building, etc, etc, but nah not arson guv.

I gathered that. Don’t really care to be honest.
If having a bonfire make it late evening or early morning when area might be damp through condensation, I always wet down surrounding area and have hose pipe at the ready and burn small amounts at a time. Better still wait to after a shower or later in year. Please also check for animals,often I have found baby rabbits, slow worm’s and toad’s etc.
About time the council stoped bonfires this is what happens and it’s bad for people with he,th conditions and the environment STOP THEM.
Bonfires are antisocial and should be banned in built up areas. If you have no car to go to the dump with then there are green bins, if you’re too mean to do that then ask a friend with transport to help.
Bonfires should be an antisocial thing of the past, they stink & are full of toxins that put our health at risk. There’s nothing worse than going into your garden to enjoy the evening sun set to find some inconsiderate person!!! has lit a bonfire.
We have clean air zones springing up around the country & we’ve progressed to being able to go to a pub & enjoy clean air, but we’re still cursed by bonfires.
The recent vehicle restrictions at the dump haven’t made things easy (resulting in more fly tipping & bonfires) but it’s not impossible to go & dump garden waste etc for the professionals to dispose of.
People need to wake up & stop making life uncomfortable for others.
