A 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after being caught spraying offensive words on a war memorial in Newport this afternoon (Friday).
An off-duty sergeant witnessed the incident taking place at the junction of Carisbrooke Road and Castle Street at around 13:20 and moved in to detain the male for criminal damage.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 58-year-old from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and remains in custody at this time.
It has been requested that offensive words sprayed on the memorial – Mary, Jesus and IRA – are cleaned as a matter of priority.

What a tosser ! If it wasnt fot the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice during World conflict, he would not have his Freedom to carry out such outrageous act’s of vandalism.
Just happens that an Alcoholic treatment centre is very close too this Memorial monument ! There lays a story.

When I was just 8 years old I fell from a very high kid’s slide and that slide would not be allowed today, however, I fractured my skull and spent three months in hospital and a further three months in a convalescence hospital.
When my family visited me I had no idea who they were because I had lost my memory, I even had to start my schooling all over again.
And to this day I do not remember the accident, I only remember opening my eyes wondering who the people were looking at me in my hospital bed.
I still attended mainstream school suffering lot’s of bullying, but I got through it and life carried on as normal.
I know my spelling is poor, but I’m not the only one. At the end of the day I haven’t done too bad…

Perhaps this ‘gentleman’ (which I use in the loosest of terms) should take a look at the names and ages of the people on that memorial. They gave this idiot the freedom to protest I hope they don’t feel their efforts were in vain
