It’s a traditional sign that Christmas is coming when Newport Fire Station put their tree up and turn on the lights atop their drill tower.
Once again firefighters from Blue Watch have been busy organising the annual decorative operation after its noticeable absence last year.
The tradition of a tree being lofted atop the station goes back 40 years and despite a break last year, it has returned and looks to be bigger than ever!
The fire station tree will light up the Newport skyline this festive season thanks to the help and contributions made by the Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council and local sponsors Thompson Plant and Garden Centre/Shide Christmas Trees, Ace Scaffold, Moreys timber merchants and Spencer Rigging Ltd.
However, this year there will be no switch-on ceremony due to the current restrictions, with the lights set to sparkle over the town from Monday 30th November, to ensure they’re on for the entirety of December.
The team have also added an extra touch this year as a way of thanking the NHS for their incredible work that they carry out in these difficult times. So make sure you get the chance to see the tree in all its glory at some point throughout December!
Ryde’s tree is also being switched on shortly, as previously reported by Island Echo.

Christmas, where we’re encouraged to over spend and over eat. Create more pollution and spread all the bugs around the population. If there was a Jesus he would be rolling in his grave.
It is Jesus’s Birthday celebration.
So Richard, would YOU have been happy if you had no party, no presents and not watched your loved ones and friends NOT having a good time?
IF your idea of celebrating the greatest mans Birth is to not have the above, but to give all your money to that lot who don’t share our religion, who often hate us, who breed us into their poverty and crime, then YOU go ahead, the rest of us will celebrate OUR way by enjoying OURSELVES for once ‘without’ guilt.
The grinch all out again for god sake let’s enjoy Christmas as best as we can…
