A cohort of 6 Ryde Harriers made the journey to Netley near Southampton for the latest fixture in the Hampshire Road Running League, with Chris Newnham securing a dominant overall win in a field of nearly 700 athletes.
The 10km race featured a twisting, undulating course with sections of trail and gravel, but that didn’t stop Chris Newnham from putting in an outstanding performance. After covering the opening 2 kilometres in just 6 minutes, he pulled away from the rest of the field and went on to win comfortably in 00:31:49.
Gary Marshall continued his strong form with a time of 00:34:40, finishing 6th overall and 1st in the V40 category. It marked his third race in as many weeks, including a recent 100km ultra event.
Simon Newman placed 32nd with a time of 00:37:34, closely followed by Tom Fallick in 46th at 00:38:28. Team captain Trevor McAlister came home in 107th position with a time of 00:41:49.
Trish Train, preparing to represent England in the Swansea Half Marathon next month, delivered another age group win. She clocked 00:43:46 to finish 143rd overall and 15th among the women, claiming 1st place in the Vet 55 category.
Paul Newnham, father of Chris, made a strong return from injury. He finished 204th in 00:46:13, placing him in the top third of the field and 6th in the V60 category.
The Ryde Harriers now turn their focus to hosting the Brading 10k on Sunday (1st June) and the remaining fixtures in the Hampshire Road Running League.
