The new access road serving Ryde Pier is nearing completion as work on the Ryde Interchange project is set to ramp up in the coming months.
Now the summer season is at an end, work on the project will enter a particularly intensive phase before the run-up to Christmas.
During the coming months, this activity will include the completion of the new pier access road and, as part of this element, the re-alignment of the pedestrian crossing outside the King Lud pub and associated drainage work.
This work at the pedestrian crossing will mean there will be some new traffic arrangements coming into effect from 10th October and lasting for around 4 weeks.
In the first 2 weeks of these works, the south (town side) side of the Esplanade will be used by traffic travelling eastbound (towards Dover Street roundabout) and therefore shut to westbound traffic between George Street and Union Street, with a diversion via George Street, Cross Street and Union Street. St Thomas Street will be one way in a westbound direction.
Access to business will be maintained. During this phase, traffic will be able to enter Ryde Pier via the newly created new link road and leave via the existing exit.
For the following 2 weeks, the southside lane (normally used by westbound traffic) will be closed with the same diversion in place but access will remain for business deliveries where safe to do so. Eastbound traffic will be largely unaffected by this phase, with entry and exit to the pier via the new access roads and Thomas Street will reopen in both directions.
Access to the taxi rank will remain at all times during the forthcoming work.
At the same time as all of this, the work to reconfigure the bus station and other associated works will continue.
Councillor Phil Jordon, Cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said:
“I am pleased that now the summer is behind us, work on this important project is intensifying and that, as we are seeing with the progress of the new pier access road, things are really starting to take shape.”

With those who use the buses all the time for safety reasons why can’t they put a temp crossing to get to one side of the temp bus to to the other and on the other side (near ryde castle) put a shelter and a bench as you’re waiting over there for at least 15-20 mins sometimes more and if it’s raining (as this time of the year it’s gonna happen more) you’re going to get soaked
Agreed, they really do need a crossing there. I’m surprised that no-one thought of it. At the moment people are having to step out between parked buses to get to the other bus stands or to the hovercraft terminal etc.

There’s a zebra crossing 25m down the road, stop being lazy and use that, also bring an umbrella!
With this layout shown, I wonder how many coming off the pier will turn right and shoot up St Thomas’s…?( when clear naturally..) instead of going all the way to Dover st and back… already have vehicles coming off pier and turning right up George st…
Should have a temporary alighting only stop bottom of Union St…
