Island Echo has received multiple reports overnight of 2 ‘whippet type’ dogs allegedly attacking cats in the Bay Area with at least 1 cat reported killed.
Island VetCare issued a warning to cat owners last night (Friday) in the Shanklin and Lake areas that they had received 2 separate reports of cats being attacked by a pair of ‘whippet type dogs’.
Subsequent sightings of the dogs placed them near the KFC in Lake before heading towards Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club where members of the public tried unsuccessfully to catch them.
The incidents have been reported to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary who have been approached by Island Echo for comment.
In the meantime cat owners in the area are advised to keep their pets indoors.
UPDATE @ 17:17 – A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now issued the following statement:
“We received a report shortly after midnight today (Saturday 17th June) that 2 unaccompanied dogs were running around the area of Manor Road in Lake.”
“It was also reported that 2 cats had been killed.”
“This incident has been filed pending any further lines of enquiry becoming available. Any new information that comes to light will be reviewed and all reasonable lines of enquiry investigated.”

OMG….practically every day there are reports of dogs attacking humans especially young children and now it is cats. Why can’t dog owners be more vigilant and responsible to what there dogs are doing????
How very dare you associate this with Antisocial behavior! Whippets are hunting dogs, by definition this is a social activity. Only the poors do anti social things!
I believe it was two dead and one seriously injured by then end of last nights escape and that others have been killed in past escapes. People also reporting they will no longer walk their dog round that way anymore as these dogs get out so frequently it’s becoming a serious problem! Sending love to all those who have lost pets to this and hope the owners are held accountable
“Members of the public tried unsuccessfully to catch them”
No sh*t there whippets
Saw both of them about 9.15 pm over Sandown golf course while walking my dog, avoided them as they had no owner with them
Guess it no dittrent from what cats do to wildlife…young birds or feeding parent birds in a lot of cases.most a risk then the chicks simply starve to death..
And yet, there are no news reports about the countless attacks on our native wildlife from domestic cats that are allowed to roam around our streets and countryside.
Nice to see a report has been filed, these dogs I assume had escaped if not irresponsible ownership. They attacked cats so to many that won’t be important, I feel for the owners, being a cat owner myself. Perhaps if the animals had attacked a baby, toddler or small child there would be more action to locate these dogs before it happens. I know the police are under-staffed so why not get the RSPCA involved, these dogs have now attacked and they will do it again!
From the comments I’ve seen online, it is evident that the address of these dogs owner is public knowledge. The police therefore need to act decisively and these dogs should not be in a position from here on, which is as politely as I can state it, to kill beloved neighbouring cats.
GOWAN DAVEE
my g dave
gowan david you absolute beast
People know who these 2 dogs belong to. Apparently this is not the first time this has happened. The dogs owner needs to be more careful and make sure the dogs cannot get out. Be responsible. This is horrendous. Poor cats. They didn’t deserve this.
If people know where to find the dogs…….
