2 vehicles have become stranded in metre-deep flood water near Downend this morning (Wednesday) with firefighters called out to rescue the motorists involved.
A Mazda MX-5 and a Ford Eco Sport have been abandoned in the flood on Briddlesford Road, outside Lynnbottom Tip – a regular flood location.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has mobilised 2 appliances from Newport to the scene, where it is understood at least 1 person has been assisted from their vehicle. It’s thought that the occupants of the other vehicle were able to evacuate themselves.
The road is closed in both directions.
It comes following a night of torrential rain which has led to a flood warning being issued for the Monktonmead Brook and St John’s area in Ryde. Island Line trains are already suspended in this area as the lines are underwater.
In Binstead, several homes have been flooded out and vehicles have become stranded as the flood-prone area around Cemetery Road takes another hit. The main road from Newport to Ryde is also flooded in several locations, worst of all near Ryde Golf Club.
Motorists should only travel if absolutely required, taking care on all roads. Flooding is being reported through Arreton, Whiteley Bank, Fairlee Road and on the main road into East Cowes.
