Police and paramedics are in attendance at Wootton High Street where a motorcyclist has been involved in a road traffic incident this evening (Saturday), which has resulted in the main road between Newport and Ryde being closed in both directions. The incident – involving a scooter displaying L plates – has occurred at the junction with New Road. Emergency services were called to the scene at just before 18:00. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a critical care paramedic and an ambulance crew in attendance.
Police have closed the busy A road between Brannon Way and the junction with Firestone Copse Road. Traffic is extremely heavy through the forest and into Havenstreet as motorists look to divert around the closure. Southern Vectis Route 4 and 9 buses are disrupted also. UPDATE @ 18:32 – The closure has now been lifted as the scooter has been moved to the side of the road.
All traffic can once again travel on the main Newport to Ryde Road in both directions. The scooterist, who is thought to have escaped any serious injury, is being assessed by paramedics. UPDATE @ 20:22 – It has been confirmed that the female motorcyclist came off her bike when the backend slid out from underneath her. No other vehicle was involved, despite initial suggestions that a car had collided with the bike.
