Motorists heading into Newport should expect significant delays owing to a motorcycle crash, which has forced the closure of the diversion route into Newport this morning (Tuesday).
Police and paramedics are currently on scene at Whiterails Road (Staplers Road), between Butterfly World and Monkey Haven, where a motorcycle has been involved in a road traffic collision.
The road – which is currently being used by all traffic heading into Newport from East Cowes, Wootton and Ryde due to the planned closure of Fairlee Road – has been closed in both directions.
The crash, which saw an articulated lorry smash into a tree branch, which in turn hit the motorcyclist, occurred at just before 07:00.
Traffic is already tailing back towards Wootton Common ahead of the morning rush hour, with the situation only set to deteriorate.
Yesterday, the queue to get into Newport tailed backed over 4 miles towards East Cowes, on the first day of the Fairlee Road closure.
Those heading into Newport this morning should prepare for even lengthier delays, as vehicles are diverted via Briddlesford Road and Long Lane (or Blacklands Lane for light traffic).
Southern Vectis is advising that its Route 5 and 9 buses are diverting via Long Lane until further notice.
UPDATE @ 07:43 – Whiterails Road has been swiftly reopened by Police, although traffic remains heavy in the area.

I drove past the incident this morning, I wish the rider all the best and hope they were not seriously injured.
I’m not surprised, where these absolute, useless bellends IWC and island roads, shut main roads for weeks, then expect people to drive around diversions for miles, on mainly country lanes.
Maybe if whoever is responsible for highways had looked up and seen these branches, instead of planning how to f#*# up drivers trips to and from work. This would not have happened.
£ to a pinch of shit, its been reported before as other lorries and buses must of clipped it.
The broke end of the branch must have been nearly 50mm diameter.
Too be honest due to all the various road works and road closures
and diversions etc.
Numpties need to drive more careful.
I saw a Numpty riding a motorbike yesterday along Duver Road
travelling at 50mph+
Many Motorcyclists think they have 9 lives.
DRIVE SLOWER!, the quicker this Council gets with the agenda the better 20mph is plenty the better!
I hope the Motorcyclist is ok.
Shut up, and go away, give us all a rest.
I am off on hols next week, don’t miss me too much.
Numpty
It won’t be long enough..
First and most importantly hope the biker is ok…But with the regard to your comment about 20 is plenty – what a load of crap…Drivers should adhere to road speed limits and road conditions (which they never will as long as the court system doesn’t punish properly). Those that currently consistently driving at 20 are more of a danger to other road users. Cars and bikes (even push bikes) are also not designed to be driven continuously at 20 – that’s why they have gears!!! Get a life and stop trying to nanny state everybody. Drivers need to take responsibility for their own actions.
Don’t be a Numpty all your life, if you cannot see
that there is a speeding problem on the island
I suggest you book into Specsavers
My mobility scooter does nearly half that speed. What a major cock up if everyone travelled at 20 mph. Maybe okay for a certain NUMPTY that keeps on about it. Enough is Enough reminds me of that annoying character on the television played by Harry Enfield, “It’s only me”.
“DRIVE SLOWER!” …
but it’s difficult to drive any slower, or more carefully, when your average speed is just 0.1mph, when stuck in this rediculous traffic….
“Numpties need to drive more careful.” & you need to STFU
Another 9 carat Numpty, the island is full of them
must be the sea air.
Oh will you just FUCKOFF with your 20 is plenty shite your just another sad twat that owns or leases a shit EV ..future my arse.
Are you really advocating a 20MPH limit for the entire Island? You must not be a car driver, you are however, stupid. It’s totally impractical to go so slow, and also detrimental to most engines whilst also being very fuel inefficient.
It’s OK he’s an EV driver so mentally unstable…like millipede who he looks up to.
Beats paying £2 a litre for diesel.
Still better than driving a sad twat mobile milk float’s came out in 60s/70s..now all gone ..wonder why.
I am happy to drive at 20mph if all other numpties
do too.
Once again, you plug in your keyboard to spew forth vileness “Enough is indeed Enough” you fool. How can getting hit by a branch knocked off a tree by a lorry be anything to do with the motorcyclist being at fault. You need to take a long hard look at yourself and your foul views and maybe never darken these comment sections again if you cannot be trusted to temper your impulses. I have seen 2 year old children with better self awareness than you.
Another Numpty
Bless you
you really write a load of garbage. do you do it just for a reaction ?
here’s one …. shut up
Fancy talking to yourself in that tone
What a complete Numpty
Could agree more with you island roads have very little planning skills if any and certainly no contingency plane should and has shit hit the fan
