26-year-old Leon Gladdis, who has been described in court as having a ‘horrendous record of driving offences’ and a ‘disregard for court orders’, has been sentenced to 26 months in prison for a number of offences.
Gladdis, care of Southfield Gardens in Ryde, pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and driving without insurance on 14th June 2023 during his latest appearance before Magistrates last Tuesday (12th September).
Ann Smout, prosecuting, explained that at around 18:00 in the evening, Police on patrol on Ashey Road in Ryde had their attention drawn to a motorcycle. Officers followed the 2-wheeled vehicle along Upton Road before it stopped on nearby Bettesworth Road, a stone’s throw from Southfield Gardens. It was here that officers approached the rider.
When questioned, the male admitted he had no insurance and that he had no licence. However, Gladdis had initially tried to confuse the Police by giving a fake name to officers, but his real name was soon discovered.
By committing this latest offence Gladdis was in breach of a Crown Court suspended sentence, which was imposed in April 2023.
It’s not his 1st breach though… just weeks after being given that suspended sentence, Gladdis admitted failing to provide, careless driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance after he crashed an MG on Morton Road in Brading, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The 26-year-old landscape gardener, who has a long list of previous convictions, was due to appear before Magistrates on 25th July, however, he failed to show and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Last week’s hearing was adjourned and sent up to the Crown Court where – conveniently – Gladdis’ name was already listed on the same day in relation to a warrant.
At that Crown Court hearing, His Honour Judge Richard Shepherd sentenced Gladdis to 26 months in prison for various offences, including the driving without a licence and driving without insurance offences from June.

He looks like an intelligent individual.
We are hoping that the spell in gaol will widen his circle of friends.
There is no mention of a new driving ban in the sentence.?
About time they put such an offender behind bars.
This should be a lesson to other morons who keep
committing traffic offences.
Drink and Drug driving should be instant imprisonment.
Let’s get crap off our roads.
Leon is an absolute numpty.
About time the Police finally did there job, well done for sending him away.
Two years of sausage in the peach for this idiot.
Bad man, this one…
…
These people are incapable of respect or care for other people let alone themselves, a life full of convictions lays ahead.
Just one look at him shows he is a wrong ‘un.
looks like he was one of the characters playing banjo in the film deliverance
What a load of bollox. You can’t tell by looking at someone if they are scum or not. Doing so is what leads you to being accused of discrimination. More over you leave yourself open to being scammed, “she looked so trust worthy, can’t believe she lied to me”.
Don’t trust, verify! Check everyone you deal with, everyone.
I disagree.
I have a very good idea of who is scum or not, just by looking at them. I have had this super power all of my adult life.
Looking at the mugshots in recent Island Echo stories they all look shifty and deserve a spell in gaol.
You mention being scammed ~ “she looked so trust worthy, can’t believe she lied to me”.
I am sorry this happened to you but this is the problem with mail order brides, the scam is in the typo as they are 100% selling a male.
I am pleased this man is now put away, could you imagine if he married a lady named Gladys and then you happily saw her.?
You would say ~ I’m glad it’s Gladys Gladdis.
We can’t have that tongue twister situation, keep him locked away.
Err fred two well known expressions
– if the shoe fits…
if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck – then it is a duck
That’s the choices he has made, not very bright, choices & consequences, his chosen career pattern.
He’ll be out in six months and driving again and again and again. Give if a few years and he will kill someone if not himself. When you remove the roads policing you enable people like this to do what they do. Thanks Tories for the crime wave on the island. Was your tax cut worth the life’s lost because of you cutting the police on the island????
Finally, proof that the neanderthals actually didn’t died out?
He looks like a cast member of the Worzel Gummidge show.
Leon hasn’t been the same since he got smacked in the face with a shovel. His nickname is Doug.
Leon Gladdis AKA Speedygonzalez.
State of it
Let’s hope it doesn’t breed
