Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision in Brading last night (Wednesday).
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were called just after 20:30 to a collision at the junction of Morton Road and Old Morton Road.
Island Echo understands that the vehicle was speeding along the road when – in an attempt to overtake a vehicle – the driver lost control and smashed into a metal post.
It is also said he tried to leave the scene by taking a car belonging to a witness who was watching events unfold.
A 26-year-old man from Ryde was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, and using a vehicle without third party insurance.
A spokesperson from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Officers are investigating the exact circumstances of the collision and are keen to hear from anyone who can assist their enquiries.
“We want to hear from anyone who saw the MG in the moments leading up to the collision. In particular, we’d like to hear from anyone who may have dash cam footage of the vehicle or CCTV footage that captures the vehicle.
“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting the reference 44230184106. Alternatively, you can provide information by going to our website.”

Drunk ! ..theft of a motor vehicle !! No licence !!! No insurance !!! .. Will watch with interest what sort of sentence our local Justice System dish out ?? .. This complete moron in my opinion needs to be dealt with severely !! .. In FACT he should be made an example of to Discourage other future offenders …This Bloke has broken every LAW ..
I and many others will agree with you, the police will do their part. Unfortunately the justice system will let us all down!
If I were a betting man it’ll go along this line
Drunk driving 18 month ban
No licence and insurance, a fine
Vehicle theft, suspended sentence
Do gooding brief will spin a sob story broken home etc
The clown will walk out of court laughing.
Makes your blood boil thinking about it.
Couldn’t agree more – exactly what I thought. Those in authority who fail to make the punishment fit the crime are as guilty as the perpetrator, in my opinion, because they permit the behaviour to continue and often, deteriorate further and someone dies eventually.
Probably drugged up racing you can see by the type of car it is, they are so dangerous these chavvy idiots.
If he is guilty, throw the book at him. That could have been an innocent pedestrian instead of a lamp post
26-year-old man from Ryde was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, and using a vehicle without third party insurance…
So, why are the police asking for any further assistance?? It’s just another dragged up lowlife that should be put out of its missury….
The police are gathering evidence and the stronger, the better. Obviously if there’s camera recordings, etc that’s helpful in court to get this idiot put away for longer.
It appears another idiot was at the wheel, and on and on it goes.
Oi Kev where is Bev
And when they are brought to justice the police have done as much as they can the judges in many cases just give them a slap on the wrist and when justice seems to be done and a justified sentence is given bloody do gooders say its to harsh
More terrible island drivers will be along shortly. You druggy islanders are hopeless drivers.
All drugged up drivers are hopeless whether it is on the Island or anywhere else in the world. As anywhere else more will unfortunately be along as sure as night follows day. Do not be mistaken or stupid enough to believe because it happened on the Island it does not happen anywhere else on a regular basis, because you are surely not that stupid are you?
By the way Alcohol appears the problem on this occasion not drugs! or did you simply not read that?
More terrible comments from Burley driver will be along shortly, short on facts and as insulting as usual.
Lot of observers would argue that alcohol, like love, is a drug, Kev. Nothing finer than a cold pint on a sunny day, and I’m really glad I’ve got some panadol to hand when my head hurts. It’s the misuse or overdoing of it- just like some food or screen-staring or coach-potatoing. that does the damage. Moderation in all things, except learning, thinking, exercise and sex is the key, perhaps?
True, but the size of that rock and amount of people who are doing drugs and drinking with intentions to drive makes it a very dangerous place. Plus other road users that find it hard to follow normal road manoeuvres.
Kev it Bev we found your little pecker
It’s a shame that lamp post wasn’t you mum
Attempted theft? If he was in it and it’s not his then surely it’s theft??
Window Sticker says it all
More great drivers will be along soon…!
And you moan at the elderly drivers, kids eh?
Hopefully the idiot has written his own car off.
Haha a boy racer who thinks he is the islands best driver when he’s drunk or drugs. Good luck getting insurance for the next 5 years
“attempted theft of a motor vehicle”?
So did the driver attempt to steal a different vehicle then the one they crashed?
Yes, it says he tried to steal a vehicle from a witness, after the crash, to get away
99% of the time people only overtake other vehicles by breaking the
Speed limit.
The problem on the Island is that there are no speed camera’s installed along
Island Roads like many parts of the country.
What a suprise, the police need help to do their job again !!!
What a dick. Another couldn’t give a shit about anyone’s safety. This is all too common now. Tougher sentences for drink & drug driving. These idiots could kill people. Scary.
Yet another example of how the island magistrates’ sentencing and rehabilitation works so well!
Are their hands tied or do they actually think a measly fine and disqualification with a few words along the lines of “You’re a naughty boy/girl, so we’re giving you a little slap on the wrist” will work in their fairytale world.
Thank god it wasn’t a person that the car hit!
Come on ageist haters, this must have you all screaming in frustration because you cannot blame an older driver, this idiot is just one of many like him who put other peoples safety in great danger but happily this time no one else was hurt.
The Metal Post was hurt.
Posts have feelings, posts have rights – and one of those rights is not to be smashed into by drunken idiots.
Hopefully, the post will make a full recovery.
I hope the post hasn’t got PTSD, will need therapy to get over it.
Apparently he was driving along obeying the speed limit and an elderly lamp post just jumped out and attacked him.
I’m waiting to see the loud Navy Blue Ford Focus seen racing through Aspe Heath this morning on its side somewhere on the island.
