A driver from Totland who crashed into another vehicle at a set of temporary traffic lights in Whitwell, before driving home along the Military Road with a damaged car, has pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention.
Vincent Matthews, 33, of St Saviours Road, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Thursday afternoon (20th October) for a trial having previously pleaded not guilty to charges of driving without due care and attention, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
However, at the start of the trial Matthews changed his plea to guilty to the without due care matter. The Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence in respect of the fail to stop charge.
It was on 16th April this year that a black MG3 – now known to have been driven by Matthews – didn’t stop at a red light on Ventnor Road and collided with a green Nissan Serena, causing injury to Mr and Mrs McLinden. The vehicle then allegedly made off in the direction of Niton with the suspect vehicle seen by members of the public with damage down the driver’s side and the front number plate hanging off.
The MG – registration LE69 MMV – was later located near Matthews’ home in Totland.
Vincent Matthews was initially arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after a road accident, using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence and common assault. However, no action was taken in respect of the public order offence, nor the common assault.
For the offence of driving without due care and attention, Magistrates handed Matthews 9 points on his licence, fined him £162 and ordered him to pay £650 costs with a £34 surcharge.

The CPS offered no evidence on failure to stop? – CPS are not fit for purpose. The victims were injured and car damaged – car then found in Totland 15 miles away!,if he had stopped then police wouldn’t of been looking for him etc.
Surprised this pratt hasn’t been prosecuted for dodgy driving before.
Only 9 points?? Why not a 1 year ban?!
Hope the victims family visit the gimp
well big deal that will show him..less than a grand ..next
Pretty obvious, he was in probably drunk which is why they fail to stop then shoot home and deny all knowledge of being out
How long was it before the police caught up with him? Enough time to sober up?
My god a policeman in Whitwell most people going to church its almost like is ther life in Peckham
Great British justice for you a tatal joke and it’s for arrogant scum like that I carry a 3 quarter inch drive breaker bar in the pocket on the back of my front passenger seat to exact my own justice if I am subjected to that kind of arrogant crap because the police and the cps and the entire “justice system” in this country are a waste of space nothing more than tincel on a Christmas tree the dry dead diseased Christmas tree that is this country
Thanks for admitting to possession of an offensive weapon, you mug
