44-year-old Charlotte Mathers has escaped being sent to jail despite pleading guilty to an offence that put her in breach of a suspended prison sentence issued by the Crown Court.
Mathers, of Terrace Road in Newport, previously pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after a road accident and failing to report an accident following an early hours crash in Sandown back in December of last year.
It was just after 05:00 on 4th December that Police were called to Albert Road, Sandown when a VW Beetle – owned and registered to Mathers – ploughed into a number of parked vehicles, causing extensive damage, the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard this afternoon (Tuesday).
By the time officers arrived, the driver and passenger of the vehicle had already fled the scene leaving behind destruction to 5 vehicles and the VW abandoned in the middle of the road. A Subaru Impreza sustained £3,000 of damage whilst a Mini One was completely written off.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the Isle of Wight Magistrates court that Mathers failed to report the accident within 24 hours but later came forward to Police, stating that she was fleeing someone who had been chasing her. Mrs Smout said that in voluntary interview Mathers stated she believed an ex-partner was following her through Shanklin, Lake and into Sandown. After the crash, she then fled the scene as she feared the vehicle was going to turn up – but it didn’t.
Mathers and her new boyfriend went to a nearby hotel to seek a room and despite having mobile phones, made no effort to report the matter to Police, the court heard.
Magistrates decided on 15th February to send the case to the Isle of Wight Crown Court for sentencing as Mathers was in breach of a 4-month prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, that was issued by the Crown Court in February 2021 for the offence of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control.
Charlotte Mathers appeared at the Isle of Wight Crown Court for sentencing today (Tuesday) and was handed 6 points on her driving licence and made subject to a 12-month probation order with 15 rehabilitation days attached.
The suspended sentence was not activated after hearing from defence solicitor Oscar Vincent that it would be ‘unjust’ given Mather’s personal circumstances.
There doesn’t appear to be a lot of sense in having suspended sentences if they’re not a deterrent and not enforced.
What do rubbish like this have to do to get a proper sentence?
‘Unjust’ given her personal circumstances!
What about the personal circumstances of the peoples whose vehicles she damaged/wrote off?!
Sorry, this should have been a custodial sentence!
Send in a district judge to deliver the correct and justified sentencing, these magistrates are just not up to the correct standard.
Wiggy falls in sh*t and come out smelling of roses about time it was held accountable for her actions instead of playing the victim
A very immature way to talk about someone who has suffered from alopecia from the age of SIX and has had to endure very cruel endless bullying due to VILE people like YOU who no matter WHAT, just cannot put themselves in the shoes of others.
I expect you are one of those harbingers of hell that made my life a stinking MISERY at school and because of me being ostracised by everyone at school and treated me like a plague victim that nobody wanted, all just because my hair fell out.
Nothing short of heartless cruelty. If you can speak of me like that despite knowing my suffering and decide to childishly name call when you are supposed to be an adult… how on EARTH do you treat other people in your life?? I sincerely hope to GOD that someone with your reckless attitude doesn’t keep animals if you believe that it is acceptable to call a person names because their hair fell out after the shock of returning home from foster care, running upstairs to greet my beloved Daddy, flinging his bedroom door open, so brimming with excitement that they let me come home, to find his room EMPTY because my mother had decided to kick him out whilst I was away.
A few days later my hair started falling out and at 44 years old I still suffer the same condition now.
So you think that’s it acceptable to continue to BULLY me and also to do it in public!! shame on you and it’s even more of a crying shame that you didn’t put your name calling comment on Facebook because then you would of showed everyone just who and WHAT you are.
I’m so glad that you are not in my life and feel great pity and sympathy for the people that are. If you was at school with me then you must be roughly the same age as myself.
I would of thought that you would of grown UP by now and realised that your very sick and twisted way of thinking has a devastating effect on the poor souls that you bully.
Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do. Just as cruel and barbaric as when Jesus was on the cross and was suffering thirst, instead of giving him water, they gave him vinegar. Disgraceful.
So because someone has been bullied, which is sad does not mean she can do what she likes and get away with it, a lot of us have/had issues, we don’t crash in to cars and bugger of, keep to the law
And this has what to do with driving exactly?
Jesus Christ….!
Are you comparing your suffering to that of Gods only child ?
The only reason that they did not lock you up is obviously because you would be better off in hospital.
We all have “personal circumstances” but we all don’t break the law or put other people’s lives in danger.
So many suspended sentences and they seem to enforce them.
Be a different story if it was a male
Ooh, I don’t know. Way too lenient over here by half. Though something stinks with this case.
A lad I know pushed someone who fell and cut his chin. He got 200 hour’s community service and a £2000 fine. The justice system is so wrong. This person could of killed someone it just doesn’t make sense.
What is the point of the judiciary? Seriously? – this sort of thing is a mandate to go ahead and do what you dam well please without consequence. Pathetic.
This should be readdressed. Something’s not right here. How the hell has this bitch avoided a prison sentence. She was on a suspended sentence already, laid down by the Crown Court, then some stuffy judge lets her walk away. Something stinks here!
Who the hell are you to call me a BITCH for having a car accident?? I’m surprised that you havn’t called me a ” chav” again.
I am going to report you to the police for using insulting words to cause alarm and distress, along with Alex on here that is now calling himself by a different name from Cranstoun Close in Totland Bay who has nothing better to do than watch and record everyone in the road 24/7 on his CCTV camera.
Why can you lot not do anything Constructive with your time on this earth? rather than constantly bullying a person who has already had her life shattered.
Why don’t you do something helpful with your time like signing animal welfare petitions? Doing something WORTHWHILE for ONCE??
Because you lot and others cannot even tell the TRUTH about me, have no idea and no interest in even KNOWING the truth and do not even know me, it says a lot about you and your very peculiar way of looking at things.
I really do think that you need to STOP bullying me, get your facts right and maybe change your username because I havn’t seen any sunshine come from any of your comments. Only negative rubbish.
Lmfao, Yep, see your point about
” Sunshine “. Meow.
Right mis-ogg,
I wouldn’t take it to personally, as 95% of people on here are idiots ( including me ).
The courts ain’t stupid, they know what they are doing.
Good luck for the future.
Don’t let the b*******s drag you down.
What a lying bitch. She ran of because she was pissed!
A mate had a car written off by a drunk a couple years ago. It caused him significant issues getting to work whilst waiting for the low payout from the insurance. Our boss ended up helping him out and got him an old banger to use. He was lucky that our boss was understanding and able to help out. I have been told about people who then loose their job because they can not get to work.
The harm these people cause is never fully considered in these courts.
COMEDY GOLD (you can’t beat it)
Shame they didn’t put the dog down lol always next time
I have always been an animal lover.
Obviously you are NOT. Your comment is reckless, unjust and extremely hurtful.
You are obviously referring to the horrendous night that I lost my beloved little Rusty. How DARE you insult my little boy’s precious memory like that!
Talking about people’s beloved and treasured pets like their lives are worth NOTHING!! People like you make my skin CRAWL.Thank god I am a much better quality of person than all of you miserable lot. I dedicated my life to looking after pets that nobody else cared about or wanted. At least I have done something POSTIVE with my life and helped to save others.
Your disgusting remark about my beautiful little boy who I was blessed to have for seven years is way below the belt and utterly unnecessary. It do not say much for you as a person.
My Rusty got spooked in the dark on that fateful night by a dog that approached him unexpectedly off it’s lead. The accident was neither his fault NOR mine and being punished for a freak accident is the final blow along with having to put up with all the twisted liars on here.
It would do you all good to appreciate the mental and physical AGONY that I have gone through and am still going through since the accident.
The injury that I had to my arm is NOTHING compared to the feeling of being lost and losing the best little friend that anyone could ever have.
Seriously SHAME on YOU for disrespecting his memory in such a shocking way! I expect that you are also one of them people that have no respect for the dead either.
To everyone reading this, just HOPE that you NEVER have to suffer my living daily nightmare and torturous LIMBOLAND.
On a more positive note, I would like to thank my probation officer for all the effort that she has put into helping me and my solicitor who are always a pleasure to communicate with from the very bottom of my heart. Also a massive thank you to the Crown Court Judge who took the time to listen to what REALLY happened and the circumstances leading up to the car crash and by not sending me to prison because I NOT deserve that, showed me empathy, even the sweet Crown Court security lady who gave me tissues to mop up my tears of happiness and even the Crown Prosecution Service took the time to check with the police that I had suffered domestic violence at the hands of my ex partner who had been threatening me.
If there was more people like you around, the world would be a FAR better place!
I was NOT drink driving. I do not agree with it. Exactly the same as I cannot cope with lies being told about me by people that do not know the TRUTH. The truth is the truth after all.
Did you have a dog then ?
Aww poor u
NOW FOR THE TRUTH come on then lets hear your bulls#it excuse this time?
Another “slap on the wrist” sentence by our lacklustre judiciary. Have they not heard of deterrent sentences?
Maybe a nice long prison sentence would of done this worthless human a favour anyway always next time little girl who needs to grow up maybe get a job
