Mark Jefferies, an independent candidate, has secured victory in the Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch by-election tonight (Thursday).
Voters in the ward headed to the polls throughout the day, with a turnout of 985 or 32.42% – down from 41.43% in 2021.
It follows the resignation of Independent councillor Rodney Downer, who had served the local community for some 16 years after winning no less than 4 elections.
The count at Stenbury Hall in Wroxall got underway shortly after polls closed at 22:00, with the results now declared.
Mark Jefferies, who had been championed by Rodney Downer as a worthy replacement, has emerged victorious with a total of 473 votes, 48.02% of the total votes cast. He will now join the Isle of Wight Council as the representative for the ward.
He beat 2nd placed Bill Nigh (Reform) with 225 votes and David Groocock (Conservative) in 3rd with 153 votes.
Mark is a born and bred Ventnorian, who has worked in the building trade for most of his working life. He is currently the Chair for the Friends of Ventnor Cemetery, Upper Ventnor Community Association and Vice Chair of Ventnor Carnival Association.
For the last 4 years, he has served on Ventnor Town Council and has also attended many of the Wroxall Parish Council meetings over the past 3 years.

Did any of that make sense to anyone? It’s kind of snowflake behaviour the way woke triggers them so.
The majority of people who use the word ‘woke’ can’t even provide a definition if you ask them to. It’s just a buzz word people are now using to try and blame a group of people, that they can’t even define, for something they don’t understand. I am a big believer that those who use ‘woke’ are below average IQ.
Couldn’t have put it better myself. Would like to add though that if there ever was any logic to ‘woke’, then the opposite must be ‘sleep’.
