UPDATED: A man has potentially saved his property from destruction this lunchtime (Friday) by attempting to tackle a chimney fire that’s spread to the roof space of his home in Ryde.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue are in attendance at the scene on Corbett Road off Playstreet Lane, having been alerted to a property fire at just before 12:30. 2 appliances from Ryde are in attendance.
It has been confirmed that a chimney fire has spread into the loft space, possibly as a result of poor pointing. Thankfully, fire crews have brought the situation under control and the fire has now been extinguished.
Island Echo understands the homeowner attempted to tackle the small fire ahead of the arrival of firefighters, which has potentially prevented it from spreading uncontrollably.
The man has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
Fire crews remain on scene using a stirrup pump to clear the chimney. They’ve also removed a number of tiles to thoroughly inspect the roof.
UPDATE @ 14:30 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has now left the scene.
