MAN ON ROOF CLOSES BUSY RYDE ROAD

UPDATED: Police and fire crews are attending an incident in Ryde this morning (Tuesday) in which a man has taken up position on a roof top.

Cross Street has been closed between George Street and Union Street as emergency teams deal with the situation.

An Aerial ladder platform and an appliance from Ryde Fire Station are on scene with crews currently attempting to rescue the individual. No suicidal threats have been made.

Traffic – including Southern Vectis buses – is being diverted locally.

UPDATE @ 11:44 – The man has been successfully rescued and brought back down to the ground by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

Island Echo understands the man climbed onto the roof but couldn’t get back down again. Mental health workers have been requested to chat to the middle-aged man.

UPDATE @ 11:52 – Emergency services have now stood down from the incident.

Cross Street has re-opened.
