UPDATED: Police have this morning (Monday) detained a man after he entered a school in Ryde ‘armed with a syringe’ before taking up position on a rooftop.
Officers were called to the scene on West Street, Ryde at around 10:40 after the man entered the grounds of Ryde School’s Fiveways site and nearby gardens.
Witnesses have told Island Echo that the unnamed male was seen to have at least 1 syringe in his hand after he had jumped a fence.
Surrounding streets were blocked off for a short time whilst Police spoke with the man, who had by then taken up position on the school roof above reception.
The incident has since been resolved and Police have now left the scene.
UPDATE – It has been confirmed that both children and staff at the school were inside the building at the time of the incident.
A spokesperson for Ryde School has said:
“An intruder accessed the outside roof area whilst police were in pursuit of him. The children were unaware that anything was happening and the incident was dealt with swiftly by staff and police.
