The elderly driver of a Kia has escaped injury after veering off The Downs and ending up 150m further along in a field this evening (Thursday). The car left the road near the brow of the hill on Mersley Downs sometime before 16:50, going over a fence and into a field as the vehicle travelled towards Newport. The driver then proceeded a further 150m through the field before coming to a stop at a gate. It’s understood a passing rush hour motorist alerted Police to the situation, who then cut a hole in the fence to reach the elderly occupants still inside the vehicle. Those involved have been left shaken but otherwise uninjured as a result of the single vehicle incident.
Recovery of the car is to be arranged at a later date. In the meantime, the car occupants have been taken home by Police, who will be looking into the wider circumstances of the incident in due course.
