UPDATED: Motorists are experiencing long delays between Cowes and Newport this morning (Wednesday) after a car crashed into an electricity pole during the early hours of the morning.
Temporary traffic lights have been set up at Northwood by the County Showground leading to 40 minute delays for commuters and Southern Vectis Route 1 buses.
The delays come after a stolen car was driven into a pole at the side of the road at around 03:30, bringing it to the ground.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“A grey Toyota Estim collided with a pole on Newport Road sometime between 02:30 and 04:11 this morning (Wednesday). The vehicle was abandoned at the scene”.
It has been confirmed that an 18-year-old male and a 16-year-old male have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently helping police with their enquiries.
Southern and Scottish Energy engineers are working to repair the power lines in the area.
Island Roads say the temporary lights will remain in operation until around 11:30.
Motorists are advised to find an alternative route, if possible.
