Fears of a possible person in the water between Ryde and Portsmouth prompted the launch of Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat this morning (Thursday).
It was just before 08:30 that Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat in response to a reported sighting of a light, possibly from a lifejacket of a person in the water, located in the Solent to the south of Portsmouth Harbour.
The Tamar-class lifeboat quickly reached the search area and initiated a parallel track search comprising of 20 legs. Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) independent lifeboat was also directed to execute a similar search nearer to the shore.
With the search completed and no findings, Solent Coastguard released all assets and the lifeboat was rehouse at Bembridge at 11:00.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
