Multiple appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are responding to a fire that has broken out in Brighstone this morning (Wednesday).
Plumes of black smoke can be seen billowing into the sky from as far away as Ryde.
Crews from Newport, Cowes, Freshwater and Ventnor are responding to the incident, which is said to have broken out at a farm.
Fire control has said they have received at least 16 emergency calls reporting black smoke in the area.
Ryde have been put on standby at Newport Fire Station.
UPDATE @ 09:22 – The first crews have arrived on scene at Hunnyhill Farm off the B3399 Hunny Hill – the main road between Brighstone and Brook – where crews have started to dowse the flames with water.
The fire is believed to have started in an external area of the farm, thought to a silage pit. Crews are working to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby barns.
The black smoke that could be seen from across the Island is thought to have been from tyres that are used to hold down the waterproof sheeting over the silage pit.
UPDATE @ 09:45 – Firefighters have now brought the fire under control.
A water carrier from Freshwater is using nearby fire hydrants to refill appliances so residents in the area may see a drop in water pressure or discolouration for some time.
UPDATE @ 10:20 – Cowes’ appliance was stood down en-route to the incident after the first crews on the scene managed to contain the fire quickly and deemed the support from an extra appliance was no longer required.
Firefighters remain on scene.
