Residents of Carisbrooke’s Kingfisher Close came together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day last weekend (4th May) with a vibrant and heartfelt street party, raising an incredible £250 for Mountbatten.
The community spirit was alive as neighbours enjoyed a day filled with wartime music, traditional food, and shared memories. The street was decorated with bunting and flags, setting the perfect scene for a celebration of both history and togetherness.
Fundraising efforts on the day included a lively raffle that raised £53, a nostalgic ‘war-time 20p stall’ which added £15.80, and an amazing cake and food stall – with all treats lovingly baked and donated by local residents – which brought in £181.20, including a generous £55 donation from a local gardener who happened to be working nearby and stopped to support the cause.
One of the highlights of the day was the display of wartime medals and memorabilia, shared by residents in memory of fathers and grandfathers who fought in the war. Children were especially fascinated, learning about the courage and sacrifices of past generations in a hands-on and moving way.
An event organiser has said:
“A huge thank you goes to everyone who helped organise and set up the event, and especially to the talented ladies who baked such mouth-watering cakes that drew crowds to the stalls. Your hard work, community spirit, and kindness made the day a resounding success.
“The funds raised will go directly to supporting Mountbatten Hospice, providing vital care for local people and their families.
“Thank you to everyone who made it possible.”

Well done to everyone involved, no one should
ever forget the sacrifice the men and women
gave for us to live the lives we are living.
If only our Government done more for the veterans
instead they removed the winter fuel allowance,
many of these pensioners lived through the
2nd world war.
