A couple from the Isle of Wight will set off on a kayaking adventure around the Island’s coastline on Friday (25th April), raising funds for Retina UK in support of those living with sight loss, including one of the paddlers himself.
Robin Frape, who lives with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), and his wife Julie Binnington are taking on the multi-day challenge to raise money and awareness for the inherited condition.
The couple will be using a 3-man, sit-on-top kayak equipped with camping gear as they circumnavigate the Island’s coast, starting from Wootton Creek.
Their journey will be shaped by wind and tide conditions, taking them either east or west along the Solent. They aim to complete the trip in 3 to 4 days, navigating near-shore waters with a GPS-enabled Navionics App to help steer clear of hazards.
The route includes both sheltered bays like Ryde and Sandown and more treacherous stretches, such as the South West Coast near The Needles. The pair are hoping for fair weather throughout.
Robin and Julie, who married after Robin moved from California to the Isle of Wight 8 years ago, regularly support Retina UK. Julie has lived on the Isle of Wight for 25 years and came up with the kayaking idea as a personal yet demanding way to help the cause.
Robin and Julie have said:
“Those who live with RP (retinitis pigmentosa) are looking for a cure so we are pleased to support Retina UK’s ground-breaking research projects. We want the money raised to go towards Retina UK’s research projects as we see that as the way forward.
“Your generosity and support in this endeavour is greatly appreciated. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in the quest to find a cure for this challenging condition. We are deeply grateful for any help you can provide.”
James Clarke, Head of Income Generation at Retina UK, has said:
“We are so grateful to Robin and Julie for taking on this incredible challenge for Retina UK. We couldn’t carry out our ground-breaking research projects and provide our crucial support services without amazing supporters like them. We will all be cheering them on!”
