The Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit of Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police are supporting the National Police Chiefs Council Speeding Campaign.
Throughout the campaign, which is set to run between 19th July to 8th August, officers will be carrying out enforcement across the force area, targeting a small but significant minority of drivers who make the choice to speed, increasing the risks to themselves and other road users.
In 2019, there were 1,561 collisions where people were either killed or seriously injured across Hampshire and Thames Valley. Of those collisions, 191, around 12%, were recorded as having either excessive speed or travelling too fast for the conditions, as contributory factors.
PC Dave Hazlett, Road Safety Officer for Hampshire & Thames Valley Police said:
“As traffic gradually increases to pre-pandemic levels, the risk of collisions will naturally increase.
“We are urging drivers and riders to simply slow down; not only to drive within the speed limit but also drive to the road conditions.
“There are times when driving to a speed limit may be too fast particularly on motorways, dual carriageways and rural roads which present higher risks.
“Expect the unexpected and drive at an appropriate speed where you can react quickly to any hazards and stop safely.
“Speeding is one of the fatal four factor that could increase the chance of road users being killed or seriously injured in a road traffic collision.
“It’s not worth the risk.”

Just sit by Newport Police Station and listen to traffic going up Medina Way. ‘Who me officer, I was just in a low gear’. Now pull the other one.
What a pathetic statement
So, the “Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit of Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police”, no mention of the Isle of Wight. Well I guess that means they won’t be coming to the Isle of Wight then.
Can they also do one targetting the idiots who drive ridiculously slow? 20 in a 30, 30 in a no speed limit etc etc.
Where is this mythical road with no speed limit?
It’s a LIMIT not a TARGET!!!!!!!!
You can only go as fast as the cyclist in front of you.
No way it’s a minority of drivers speeding, it’s the majority and everyone knows it…
are they still short of money
I guess the speed check is to catch those celebrating not coming across roadworks for Half a mile.
Speeders might get the message one day.
I hope they also check on the people on mobiles while driving and with illegally modified cars.
Good opportunity to check insurance , M.O.T and road tax via ANPR too.
Illegal number plates are being used with no apparent consequences. On the subject of “flexible” spacing I am not too fussed , but it is the law at present, at least they can be read by cameras so not a major issue for me.
What is a far more serious serious menace is those using illegally coated plates to fool traffic cameras and prevent ANPR, illegal fonts – either non standard and or too small, and black plates on newer vehicles.
Rest assured, those coated plates definitely do not work.
Why announce this operation. Better to have the upper hand, the Police will catch more that way. Nice to incorporate the element of surprise! Listen out for the ‘defective’ loud, illegal exhaust brigade as well. They are all a pain in the ar*e. People are fed up having to listen to the boy racers in their Ford Fiesta’s coughing and spitting. Do they really think they sound good?
If they do come over to the island, I hope they take a look at the Middle Road but what’s the chance of that..
Speeders all over the island Caroline. They seem to only concentrate on Newport and the Milly Road. They should just sit in side roads, they will catch many around the island. Lake, Sandown, Shanklin all plagued with speeding cars on the main road. Late at night is a good time, not so much traffic on the roads so the boy racers can drive their sh*t mobils like we don’t have any Rules of the Road and the speed limits don’t apply to them.
Everybody seems speed these days. It’s the idiots on the country roads/lanes that get me. Accident’s waiting to happen.
Get them down Landguard Road, most of them are doing 40 to 50 mph. Scary to cross the road
Would be very nice if they could stop the loud exhaust vehicles, especially after 11:30 pm… disturbing the peace plus ask the driver/ rider if they have told their insurance company about the change to exhaust… because if not the vehicle may not be insured…!!
