A 15-year vision for the Isle of Wight’s transport network will go out for public consultation this Autumn, councillors have agreed.
The draft Island Transport Plan (ITP) was approved for publication by the economy, regeneration, transport and infrastructure committee (ERTIC) at its meeting last Thursday (10th July).
Concerns were raised about the timeliness of some data used in the plan, with Councillor Chris Jarman, representing Totland and Colwell, warning that much of it was very historic and not up to date. Officers confirmed they would review and update datasets where possible before the plan goes live for consultation.
Transport strategy manager Stewart Chandler explained that some references to the 2011 census would remain due to the impact of the pandemic on 2021 transport data.
The ITP sets out a vision for an inclusive transport system supporting a low-carbon, safe and prosperous future, while protecting the Island’s unique environment. Its four main objectives include achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions, improving resilience to climate change, ensuring travel is sustainable, efficient and affordable, and supporting safer, healthier communities.
A report prepared ahead of the meeting said the ITP has been drafted in line with the council’s Climate and Environment Strategy, aiming for the Island to reach net zero by 2040.
It also recognises the role of transport in supporting local economic growth and tackling barriers such as car ownership costs by improving sustainable alternatives.
Public feedback from the consultation will help shape the final ITP draft, which is due to return to ERTIC later this year before being put to a full council vote early next year.

Perhaps we should build a roundabout on the main road outside B & Q. I’m sure the traffic would flow better than having lights there.

The answer is, go up, overpasses, flyovers, bridges will provide more road space at a different level, enhancing the transport system in a sustainable way, create employment, reduce travel time. Excellent surfaces, no digging them up every five minutes, bypassing all those road works below. LOL from cloud cuckoo land.

Love the picture that goes with this article. Surely taking a piece of land and making 2 lanes going towards Newport from Hare and Hounds would sort out a lot of problems on that road rather than being held up by traffic turning to go across the downs.

Surely the answer is to link more towns by rail.
A transport plan for the next 15 years without any mention of a Fixed Link Tunnel! This is the only solution to the decline of the island’s economy. Businesses are struggling and tourism is on its knees with hotels closing.
