The political groups are gaining momentum as they continue to campaign across the UK ahead of the General Election and one party is starting to take the lead in the Isle of Wight. It was a surprise to all, including MPs, when Prime Minister and Conservative leader Rishi Sunak called a General Election. Since he called the election, the Prime Minister, as well as the leaders from opposition parties Labour, Lib Dems, Reform UK and others have been involved in campaigns and TV debates. Bob Seely was most recently the Conservative MP for Isle of Wight, having represented the constituency in the House of Commons since 2017. Now, the Isle of Wight is divided into two constituencies; Isle of Wight East and Isle of Wight West, and Seely has confirmed that he will attempt to regain his place in parliament, representing the newly formed Isle of Wight West seat. There is still some time to go until all in the UK will vote on Thursday 4th July 2024, but we are starting to see a favourite emerge. The latest politics odds are suggesting that Labour leader Keir Starmer is given a 96% chance of becoming the Prime Minister after the UK election. Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak is only being given a 4% chance of staying as Prime Minister. These chances are so slim that it seems very likely that the current odds will be correct and we will see a change in government. When you look at the chances, it looks like Labour are clearly going to win the election, making it even more surprising that Rishi Sunak called for the public to go to the polls in the first place. The numbers aren’t quite so one-sided on the Isle of Wight. However they do also reflect a clear move in public opinion, with Labour currently the favourites to win in both Isle of Wight East and Isle of Wight West. In the East, they are given a 65% chance to win, whilst in the West they are given a 73% chance of winning. This may be a surprise to some living in the area as the constituency has been held by a Conservative since 2001. Be sure to head to the polls on Thursday 4th July 2024 as every single vote will no doubt be crucial. This General Election feels like a pivotal moment for many constituencies across the country and it will be interesting to see if current tipped party Labour will win in both the Isle of Wight East and West.
