An Isle of Wight mountain biker has secured an impressive top 10 finish in the opening round of a national cross-country series, competing against some of the UK’s top riders.
Ewan Cook took on Round 1 of the National MTB XC Points Series at Newnham Park in Plymouth on 29th March, following a recent podium finish in the opening round of the Southern XC Series.
Racing in the Elite class for the first time, Ewan lined up at the back of a 26-strong field of leading cross-country specialists.
The challenging course featured 6 laps of fast, twisty single track, multiple A and B line options, rocky descents and a bridge drop.
Ewan made a strong start, quickly moving through the field from 25th to 10th by the top of the first climb.
As the race progressed, the leading 6 riders broke away, leaving Ewan in a group of 3 battling for a top 10 position.
On the fourth lap, he dropped one of his rivals on a climb before continuing to push hard. A decisive attack on the final lap saw him break clear again and maintain his pace to the finish line.
Ewan crossed the line in 7th place.
Ewan has said:
“I can’t believe I got a top ten in my first National, racing against the best Elite riders and the top lad in the UK.
“I honestly didn’t expect it, but I’m now buzzing for the rest of the season!”
Ewan’s performance builds on his strong start to the season and marks an encouraging debut at national level in the Elite category.
He has thanked team sponsors Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries, Island Renewables Ltd, Wight Mountain, Rapanui, KReative Studios and Adrian’s Bike Shop for their continued support.
