A total of 162mm of rain has fallen on the Isle of Wight during the month of July so far – the highest total for what should be a hot and dry summer month since records began in 1952.
The Environment Agency say that the vast majority of this rainfall, which was recorded at Knighton, occurred over just 3 days – Friday, Sunday and Monday. The sudden deluge led to properties flooding in Ryde and Godshill, with roads becoming impassable.
Flooding has been experienced at Morton Common this morning (Wednesday) but the river level on the Eastern Yar is now falling by 3cm per hour. That said, flood impacts to land, cycle tracks and access paths will continue along the Yar Valley as water remains ponded and unable to drain to the river.
Over the next 5 days, slow-moving and heavy showers are forecast for the Island. The Eastern Yar will be very sensitive to any additional rain, so Islanders are being reminded to remain prepared for further potential impacts this week.
