The Isle of Wight Council has rolled out a brand new logo, introducing a more modern identity for the local authority.
Over the coming weeks and months, Islanders will start to see the new logo being used across documents, buildings, street signage and vehicles.
The logo that everyone is familiar with, complete with its diamond-shaped Island outline, has been in place for over 15 years. It launched in 2007 and was, back then, a modern replacement for the old logo design revealed in 1995 when Medina Borough and South Wight Borough councils merged with the Isle of Wight County Council to create the unitary authority.
The new logo doesn’t stray far from this, but consists of a block-colour ‘Island’ and moves the golden stroke inside the shape. The textual element of the logo is perhaps the biggest change, now in Myriad Pro – a modern-era font.
The previous logo was created in a print-dominated world, but the thin lines and multiple typefaces failed to stand out on digital devices, especially at lower resolutions. With this in mind, alongside a greater awareness of accessibility issues, the decision was made to update the logo to create something that would stand out better on social media and digital adverts.
It has been confirmed that the new official logo has been designed in-house, so no public money has been spent on expensive external design agencies.
The new logo will be gradually rolled out, for example when signage and vehicles are replaced or renewed.

How much did that cost us?
Probably about 1 million pounds
£1 million for a council worker to fill in with crayon, that’s about right.
Surely they have slipped up? No black faces or rainbows, how can this be allowed in the UK today?
it says at the end of the article
Will they have to change the colour after the next election!! 🙂
Another waste of money, stop wasting our hard earned money
This is so vital for the island, a new logo cures everything doesn’t it.
What a total waste of money who gives a Toss about a logo iow council stop wasting money and use it properly
What a complete folly the council really needs to focus on the important things and forget the vanity projects when money is so tight.
The ‘golden stroke inside the shape’ denotes the drop off area for imported drugs.
So it hasn’t cost us anything in design, and I should think not being as that could have been made by any 6 year old in about 2 minutes. But what about the cost of changing stationery, signage, vehicle sign writing etc? Huge cost for no reason whatsoever. Still, we can always offset some of it by putting up car parking charges and cutting more essential services!
Aint they got more important thing to do, seems not
Some manager no doubt wanted a jolly and warrant his job so had to come up an excuse for his design team to redesign the logo. I expect next we will see all the offices have a change of paint colour.
None of this is essential expenditure so was this listed in this year’s planned expenditure as opposed to having working toilets on the island which they dumped on to the town councils?
What a load of crap and waste of money, designed in house ? Why are tax paid council staff doodling with felt tips when should be working for benefit of community, what difference does a new logo make?. We will be getting more stickers for our bins soon.
If only we could have a new council as well one that really worked for the many and not the few
Oooh a modern-era font. Welcome to the 21st Century. Surely money could be put to better use.
a complete waste of tax payers money, do they pay someone to come up with ideas to see how much money they can waste?the council is well on its way to bankruptcy, but they will blame the government!
You can cover a Turd in glitter … but it is still a turd ..
Surely this will cost much more? For example printing letterheads etc will now use blocks of blue as opposed to just an outline therefore much more ink usage? And blue? Not a neutral colour ie Conservative?
Why not put on their logo
Run by Numpties
Clearly a design to please paint & printer ink suppliers…
OMG, never mind the lack of children’s protection service, or can’t be bothered to paint seaside railings so just replace sections when they are rusted out. I mean the list is so long I cannot be bothered to write.
Much better to spend money on a new logo, and some stickers for our bins. FFS
The logo was probably designed in a lodge near you
What a bloody waste of money… Not changing signage on vehicles till renewing…. wow…. what about everything else ….. all letter headed paper, invoices, wage slips, envelopes, council taxes bill all their signs…. what a bloody joke…. They not cutting back on things & raising rates…. on let’s waste thousands on a new logo which pillock came up with that idea……
Just remember these money wasters at the next election
It’s the Clowcil Orificers not the Councillors.
Myriad pro….looks just like Gil Sans to me. Guess this makes Isle of Wight Council the font of more money wasting.
Myriad Pro is nothing like Gil and is a very functional font. Apple used it a lot. As do I
Well if Apple used it it must be Wonderful, MUSTN’T IT?!!!
Now get rid of that terrible excuse of an IW flag & give us something with some history & heraldry instead of a clean beach award look alike!
Has the line been moved in to recognise the land slips over the last 15 years that are not mended.?
That will cost us a good few hundred thousand £s, and will it improve service, will it stop the childish stupidity in council Chambers, or even stop the blatant corruption? NO!! Another waste because there’s plenty more where that came from, in their misguided opinion!
Huh, paid by us the tax payer C….
Glad to see the council confirming our opinion of their financial management and planning abilities.
The lack of any detail in the release about the cost or services that were cut to pay for this white elephant speaks volumes
To go outside one of the shabbiest places in newport
Is that really New? They have updated the font and filled a shape.. Still stuck on Windows ’97…
With all the things wrong on the Island all the daft buggers can come up with is a logo change.
In order for Islanders to survive their council they must first avoid going to the polls, just don’t vote for at least one election. The resulting media frenzy will force the Government to look at what I a mess local government has made of managing the Island.
or better still, everyone turn up and write across the ballot paper, “None of the above”
New logo, same ‘service’! Pointless…
Someone coloured it in! How cute and at what cost?
Why on earth spend money on a logo , this is not needed.
surely it would have been cheaper and more effective to change the councilors. There might have been a more positive effect on services ?.
When we are trying to increase tourism by emphasising how quaint and olde-worlde the island is, do they really think a modernised logo will attract visitors? Stop this ridiculous idea and spend the money on paint to smarten up the high streets.
As it was so important to waste money covering the out of date Amey name on our bins, I presume we’ll now be getting stickers to cover up the old logo on them.
Lower our council tax and stop wasting our money
Council Tax should be abolished
Spend our money on necessities not this tat
That’s got to be a joke right, is it April Fools Day already? What a waste of effing money. They obviously haven’t got anything better to spend it on !!
It just SHOWS the contempt those on the top table of the council have for PLEBS that are TAX PAYEERS that pay there salaries..
Just like those in number 10, BEEN IN CONTROLE FOR FAR TOO LONG.
But, it DOES cost money.
Someone was being paid to sit there in Council time, and at our expense, to come up with this.
Have they not got enough to do at the Council that they can sit there doodling?
For goodness sake, get a grip and do the jobs you’re being paid to do.
There that well off they now are advertising a new manager position at up to £98000 odd .
So no doubt we will get another huge council tax rise next year.
I trust any new job now doesn’t mean we pay on top of that for the pension scheme that ordinary folk can’t dream of.
The money spent could have been spent elsewhere.
so much money wasted on the island.
