Isle of Wight-based comedian Bernie Quinlan has made it through to the final of the Hampshire Comedian of the Year 2025 competition, following a standout performance in the semi-finals.
Bernie competed against 8 other comedians, including fellow Islander Toby Collard, and impressed judges with her unique routine, which featured a night out involving chocolate brands and a string of confectionery-themed puns and innuendos.
Speaking after the event, Bernie said:
“I was so nervous, but I knew my material well and hoped people would enjoy it. I was very surprised to get through!”
Bernie is a familiar face on the local comedy scene and has previously performed the routine at Ballyrags Comedy Club, held monthly at FuBar in Ryde. With the venue set to close, the club will continue at the Royal Esplanade Hotel.
Geoff O’Flanagan, MC and a judge on the panel, has said:
“Bernie captivated audiences with an act full of unexpected twists and turns that kept the room hanging on her every word. Her bold and original style takes comedy in a completely fresh direction, earning her a well-deserved place in what promises to be a spectacular final showdown.”
Bernie and Toby both honed their comedy skills through the Isle of Wight School of Comedy, run by tutor Luc Valvona. Luc has praised her progress:
“I am so proud of Bernie. When she first started coming to my classes she was so shy she could hardly get through a single line without an apology. The difference between her then and now is night and day!”
The Isle of Wight School of Comedy meets on Tuesday evenings and will soon relocate to The Department in Ryde. More information is available at www.ballyrags.com.
Bernie is also in the running for Hampshire Female Comedian of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The final takes place on Friday 25th October at The Attic in Totton, Southampton.
