Islanders will start receiving the COVID-19 vaccine from next week, with those over the age of 80 in the Central and West Wight areas the first in line for the jab.
It’s been confirmed that the first doses of the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine for the Isle of Wight will arrive on Monday or Tuesday, with a second batch arriving later next week. A third will arrive the week commencing 21st December.
Clinical chair of the NHS Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group, Dr Michelle Legg, who, along with other health bodies on the Island, is running the roll out on the Island, has said the first doses will be stored in the Carisbrooke surgery and be distributed in the West and Central areas of the Island.
Nationally, the first roll-out of the groundbreaking vaccine started today (Monday) with a 90-year-old grandmother from Coventry the first person in the world to be given the potentially life-saving vaccine outside of a clinical trial.
Simon Bryant, director of public health for the Island, said the ‘brilliant’ vaccine programme is ‘hugely logistically challenged’ and the Island will receive its doses from the University Hospital Portsmouth NHS Trust, the nearest hospital hub to the Island.
The go-ahead to split the packs of 975 vaccines still needs to be given by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). It is expected any day now. Until then, the Isle of Wight will use vaccine centres to receive the doses, on an invitation-only basis.
Speaking at a meeting of the Isle of Wight Council’s policy and scrutiny for health and social care last night (Monday), Dr Legg said the situation changes almost hourly but those being given the vaccination first has been decided by NHS England and is dependent on the nature of the vaccine.
Dr Legg said:
“It was going to be the care home group of vulnerable people [who received the vaccine first]. Now, however because of the nature of the vaccine, how it needs to be stored and how it can be only transferred a few times, the cohort which NHS England has designated to be vaccinated first in the community is the over 80s who are not the housebound.
“They will be invited to vaccination, a couple of weeks before Christmas and then there are several categories that will be vaccinated next.”
Dr Legg said when the Oxford vaccine is approved by the MHRA, it is thought that will be the one to vaccinate people in care homes as it can be done ‘easily and quickly’.
Darren Cattell, deputy chief executive of the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said the trust does have facilities to store the Pfizer vaccines, as and when they do arrive, but some details are yet to be finalised. He said:
“We are all working well and incredibly hard together to navigate our way through this but, as Dr Legg said, things are changing almost on an hourly basis.”

Regulators have now issued a warning about the Pfizer Covid Vaccine jab after 2 NHS workers suffered allergic reactions. They have stated that anybody with a history of significant allergic reactions should NOT have it.Surely before you’re given this jab the person giving it has or we’ll check this?

How can tens of thousands of doctors, scientists, and some of the leading experts in infectious diseases, along with what appears to be millions upon millions of people who disagree with lockdown measures, mask mandates and potential vaccine mandates be crazy “conspiracy theorists?” Why are those who go against the mainstream narrative always ridiculed and labelled as such? Why are they constantly censored by social media platforms and why are experts in the field who oppose government measures never really given any air-time on mainstream media? Why aren’t we exploring everything, all evidence, and a wide range of opinions with regards to this pandemic and having a discussion? What’s going on here? Why have alternative therapies that have shown success been completely ignored and products that benefit big corporations, like vaccines, being made out to be our only option?

I will wait for the OXFORD vaccine and will certainly not use the one on offer now which has been under tested and they are using people as guinea pigs. Boris only agreed to use it now for political reasons.

Portsmouth QA hospital are inviting Carers from Homes to attend for vaccination.
Isle of Wight CCG says it cannot be taken into Care Homes no mention of Staff, both groups have to wait for Oxford vaccine which could be weeks or months away from being authorised.
Vaccination will help to enable visiting.
So Isle of Wight CCG why are Island Care Homes again being treated so poorly, as Second Class Citizens!!
