Islanders are reminded that wearing a face covering will be required by law in all shops and other public spaces from tomorrow (Friday) – but what is the score for pubs and restaurants?
As well as being required in all shops, face coverings have to be worn in locations such as train stations, shopping centres and in some food/drink establishments.
Anyone who fails to conform with the new law could be refused entry to premises and possibly even fined up to £100, which is to be reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.
Not everyone has to wear a face covering though – those under 11 years of age are exempt, as are those with disabilities. It is still acceptable for a bank clerk or retail worker to ask you to remove your face covering to show your identity.
Those visiting a takeaway, café or restaurant for takeaway food or drink will be required to wear a face covering. However, those sitting inside such establishments, including pubs, are not expected to when sat in a designated eating/drinking area.
The new law is not expected to be heavily enforced with many Police forces saying they will not attend mask-related incidents. Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has also said that their staff will not be challenging shoppers.
Where you must wear a face covering
- public transport
- indoor transport hubs (airports, rail and tram stations and terminals, maritime ports and terminals, bus and coach stations and terminals)
- shops and supermarkets (places which are open to the public and that wholly or mainly offer goods or services for retail sale or hire)
- indoor shopping centres
- banks, building societies, and post offices (including credit unions, short-term loan providers, savings clubs and money service businesses)
You are expected to wear a face covering immediately before entering any of these settings and must keep it on until you leave.
Where this law does not apply
- Indoor premises that sell goods or services but are not typically defined as a shop
- For example: restaurants with table service, bars, pubs, entertainment venues such as cinemas or casinos, visitor attractions such as heritage sites or museums, exercise and sports venues such as gyms, and places that provide medical treatment such as a dentist or optician

Come on guys ! The threat of this virus has long gone. Let’s get back to normal.
Idiot
I see there are still people who state the ” threat of this virus has long gone “.
Very unfortunate opinion, this attitude is hugely inaccurate and stupid. Thousands of people are dying around the world, including Britain. there are spikes in many towns /cities in the UK.
This type of attitude will spread the virus and cause illness and death, if you wish to endanger yourself and your own friends and family, that is really to your shame and totally disrespectful to every man, woman and child on earth.
Yeah 19 people yesterday! Wake up. Everyday 1400 people die in the U.K. from all sorts of things. And you still believe this covid thing?
There are a lot of brainless people out there like our kev here who think it is real.
These brainless people my friend will drag us all into ,mandatory vaccination and chip, all by about 2025. Game over!
Got any evidence to back that up ?
Real evidence I mean and not the fake figures from the government .
Police wont have time as they will be busy chasing low lifes wearing hoodies and masks getting away with more street crime and shoplifting muggings ect
But it’s ‘not going to be enforced’ Pathetic !!!
Pathetic and pointless.
So, the reason our economy won’t have a rapid, V-shaped recovery? Mask wearing will not be enforced. Yet most of the country are intelligent enough to realise masks protect others, not them, so are literally pointless unless everyone wears them. Result? The majority of people won’t risk being infected by the minority too selfish, or stupid to wear masks, retail figures will remain depressed, jobs will be lost. Get a mask on and save lives and livelihoods.
The Police shouldn’t have to get involved if everyone is sensible and does the right thing – wearing our masks, and wearing them properly.
