000825-F-6184M-037Islanders living and working in the West Wight jumped to their feet to catch a glimpse of two F-15 fighter jets flying overhead this afternoon (Tuesday).

Reports of two low and fast jets echoed across social networks shortly after 14:00, with Island Echo readers quick to identify the pair of jets as F-15 Eagles, believed to belong to the US Air Force based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk.

Readers have reported seeing the F-15s off the Ventnor coast, across Niton and in the West Wight. It is understood the fighters then travelled across Dorset, but it is unknown why they were in the area.

F-15 Eagle fighter jets can travel up to speeds of 1650mph and over a distance of nearly 2,500 miles at a time.
