Local residents already facing a massively increased Council Tax bill this year will be disheartened, but not surprised, to hear that another precept looks likely to go up – this time to fund the fire service.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) is proposing households across the region pay an average £5 more a year — or 6.63% — for its services. That means a Band D resident could pay £80.43 a year, which is £10 a year more than in 2021.
This will be on top of the Policing precept rise, the Isle of Wight Council rise of 5% and precept rises for town and parish councils – 50% in Sandown.
More than £4,350,200 is expected to be paid towards the service by Islanders.
The fire service could approve the increase at its meeting next week (Tuesday) but realises it is more important than ever to consider the impact it could have on residents.
With government funding more favourable than first thought, HIWFRS says it has avoided the need for service reductions and invested in the organisation.

Let’s be clear it is not government funding, it all comes out of the pockets of the taxpayer, whether it be the highest tax burden in 70 years given to the treasury or the massive pay and pensions busting rises demanded by the delivering less for more every year local councils – we are being bled dry for less and less and less (cos offering actual services might impact climate change or some such other made up progressive nightmare)
I am not giving an opinion on the value of the services or otherwise, but please note that all Band D and below residents got a £150 Council Tax reduction, so that should cover £150 of the increases.
They always get their money back.
it’s a found for the over payed council by the time they have finished with it very little will go to the fire service
Kev where is Bev is she with Nev who don’t like dev
Obviously Council Tax is not working.
A new system needs creating.
Islandwide permit parking would generate extra income rather than keep
Increasing Council Taxes
Piss off, there’s nothing left to give. I and many others are bankrupted by public sector greed
And they say they are asking ha bollux they aren’t ask and if you don’t pay they haven’t even got the guts to knock on your door for it they just slap a court order on you to bleed even more out of our pockets or should i say pocket as the other one has a hole in it to feed the council
If they didn’t send so many engines out to minor shunts(to prove how necessary they are), they wouldn’t need more money.
You know how much pay rise iv had over the last three years
Not a single penny
Looks like im going to work to fund and feed the council fire the few police and whoever else wants to drain me and make my decisions on weather i stay working or give up working and be a spunger.
Its looking like a very very easy decision.
And don’t forget the 6 months full pay whilst being off sick every year and the extra they earn doing extra jobs whilst on their 4 days off.
And of course the dog that didn’t need rescuing from the causeway (2 full crews) complete with the free cake and Facebook photos to make them feel important…
Dont forget their large final Salery pension at 55 and pay off which we fund I am 76 and still have to keep working.
Suck it up Buttercup!
Bitter & twisted much?
”Asked for more money” My arse, we will be robbed yet again whether we like it or not
Top heavy, less big wigs & quangos is what’s needed in the Emergency Services, put the money at on the front line no the offices!
What about the fire crew that attended the crashed car on the downs road that had already been attended by police and ambulance services yet both police and ambulance services failed to tell the fire service that all was ok. I can see so many ways they can save money.
I luvs the nee-naws I do
