Ryde man Terry Smith completed the gruelling 255-mile Thames Ring ultra marathon on Saturday (26th April), 1 of just 8 to complete the full course out of 37 starters.
37-year-old Terry finished what is considered to be the longest non-stop race in Europe in a time of 84 hours, 47 minutes and 28 seconds, to complete the course in joint 4th place.
Terry started the race at Streatley-on-Thames on Wednesday (23rd April). He passed through Reading, Windsor, Brentford, Watford, Milton Keynes, Banbury and Oxford. It was run non-stop over 100 hours with 9 checkpoints located at roughly every marathon distance.
Before the race, Terry said:
“I am not convinced I will finish, but I will give it a bloody good go.”
Terry – who runs regularly with the Darkstar running group – can often be seen running between Ryde and Cowes on his regular commute to work.
