Island Line will not be back up and running until at least Monday but the service could remain suspended for much longer, it has been announced.
No trains are currently operating between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin due to the extreme flooding experienced yesterday (Wednesday) – the worst in some 10 years.
The tunnel at Ryde is completely submerged and there is flooding elsewhere along the track.
It has been confirmed that significant damage has been caused to the infrastructure and that engineers will need to carry out repairs to track and signalling, at both the Ryde Traincare Depot and at Ryde Tunnel.
South Western Railway says that disruption is expected to continue until at least the end of the day on Sunday, meaning trains are very unlikely to operate before Monday morning.
With more rain on the way, this target re-opening could be delayed even further if the flooding doesn’t have chance to subside.
For the next few days, train tickets are being accepted on Southern Vectis Routes 2 and 3 between Ryde and Shanklin.
South Western Railway have arranged rail replacement transport to operate between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin, however, this is not operating to a set timetable.
Replace the train with a boat or barge, build a canal it would be a brilliant ride for the visitors….
The tunnel is flooded to the top, so it would need to be a submarine to get through that

I am a visitor been fir many years the people who put a silly comment think again th Wight is a great place for holidays etc the trains have a great history ie steam and electrification from 1928 to 1938 rolling stock and upgraded reasonlly the Wight dies have a river the madina running to Newport from the solent between Cowes and east Cowes and there is enough water around the Wight are you trying to sink a lovely place with a hell of alot if history ?????

I would have gone for the light rail option, filled in Ryde Tunnel and replaced it with street-running.
