The Isle of Wight Council is set to appoint an interim head of paid service and chief executive at a meeting of Full Council next week.
Wendy Perera is being recommended to councillors to take up the role to ensure a smooth handover from current chief executive, John Metcalfe, who is due to leave at the end of March after nearly 25 years with the authority.
Wendy has worked for the council for much of her career, including key roles in the planning department. She is currently assistant chief executive and director of corporate strategy.
Council leader, Councillor Lora Peacey Wilcox, said:
“It’s great to be able to recommend Wendy for appointment. She has a proven track record in local government and brings a wealth of expertise and experience.
“Wendy has been in her current role since 2018 and has worked closely with John in managing the council over this time.
“She has also been sponsored by the council in developing her leadership and management skills over a number of years in readiness for her taking on the most senior role in the council.
“She is well known with staff and stakeholders and will offer some much-needed continuity and stability for them as the council transitions into its future leadership arrangements.
“I am confident she will provide strong leadership and support to the council going forward.”
John Metcalfe announced last week that he was leaving the authority after 6 years as chief executive to take up the top job at Cumbria County Council.
Why on earth are you wasting our money on a post that is not necessary?????
And why are we paying for him to move ????
You say you need to save money here is your chance!!!!!!
We the cash cow’s are fed up of paying for you all to better yourselves and not us mere mortals !!!!!!!
Stop engage brain and you MAY actually achieve something….. ????…..
You cannot keep charging us for your fat cat pension pot …!!!
Totally selfish oiks the lot of you ME ME ME ….
Well what about US US US?????
Ooh wait 1hr free parking for Newport the ghost town wow thank you but not enough !!!!!.
Who says we’re “paying for him to move”?
Who says we are not !!!
You can bet your bottom dollar he won’t be paying for his own relocation!!!!!
Can somebody please explain what the chief executive actually does to warrant the high wages and benefits they enjoy.? Secondly, do we realy need one?
I presume that they are really really brainy and good at maths and organising things. Whilst making cuts on services to save money and then rewarding there selves with bonuses on the money that they have saved.
And once they have nothing left to cut, they move on with a golden hand shake to there next cash cow or victim.
Anywhere in the country, as long as there new employer pays there moving fees and expenses obviously and a signing on fee. And this is happening all around the country like a merry go round, and has been happening for years, and it goes on and on.
And it is mainly Tory voters who support this system because it has become the norm. (And the rich get richer).
another waste of space someone we don’t need or want
She worked in the Planning Department. Say no more!
There are too many manager’s and senior managers all ready, why do we need CEO or asst CEO when also have directors, asst directors, heads of service and loads of councillors etc. Stream line and save us c/tax payers money please .
So no interview? No casting the net for competence? All those years spent endorsing planning inconsistency is clearly nothing to be sniffed at. Still, on a positive note, we can all look forward to seeing her name emblazoned on the reams of freshly printed IOW stationery. Priceless!
If you read between the lines of the article. It basically states that this person has been GROOMED most of her adult life to fulfill this one position
I find this quite disturbing and funny at the same time.
So the IW county council, now think that they are the Kennedys.
Corruption and nepetism is alive and kicking.
the public should be given the right to have a say and even a vote ?
Well that’s a good amount of the £1,000,000 payout from the government gone then. Just on this 1 position and help the old money grabber move up north. Typical.
this money could be better of spent eleswere, like nursing home or the homeless ,i am just sick of all the cuts that I.O.W Council intoduce every year and then put up council tax by more than the rate of inflation ?
Council leader cynically increased council tax by maximum allowed. Never thought of the people struggling to pay it.
If you thought Mr Metcalfe was dubious value – wait til you see Ms Pereira!
